In his mega-hit " Independence Day ," aliens laid waste to pretty much every metropolitan center on the planet, and in his eco-thriller " The Day After Tomorrow ," much of the northern hemisphere finds itself buried under ice. In his third crack at presenting the apocalypse, this fall's " 2012 ," Emmerich taps into the angst of thousands of astrologers, doomsday enthusiasts, and conspiracy theorists who fear that a massive cataclysm will strike the earth on December 21 of that year. Yet unlike previous dates tied to the Earth's expiration, this one has its roots in various sources throughout history including interpretations of the Mayan calendar, astrology, and the ancient Chinese fortune-telling text the "I-Ching."

I WOULD SUPPOSE ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. BUT TO PREDICT A CERTAIN YEAR, OR DATE, THE WORLD WILL END. I DOUBT IS POSSIBLE. OLD-WORLD SCHOLARS, WRITERS OF THE BIBLES AND MODERN SCIENCE. REGULARLY PREDICT EARTHS END. WE DO TOO. WE SEE TODAY, MYSTERY HAPPENINGS IN THE HEAVENS/EARTH/SEAS AND IT FIGURES. EARTH IS NEAR ITS END. I DOUBT IT! THIS PLANET HAS BEEN SPINNING IN SPACE FOR EONS OF TIME AND I BELIEVE IT WILL GO ON SPINNING FOR EONS OF TIME. AS FAR AS PREDICTING THE YEAR/DATE THE WORLD WILL END. TO BE SURE, I BELIEVE WE COULD PREDICT, ALL LIFE ON EARTH MAY SOON END. AS WE SEE THE SLAUGHTER OF ALL LIFE AND THE DISCONTENT ON EARTH TODAY, IN THESE LESS THAN MODERN TIMES. I BELIEVE WE COULD PREDICT OUR END, RATHER THAN EARTHS END. EARTH DOESN'T NEED US. WE NEED THE EARTH. AND WE ARE DOING ONE BAD-SAD-JOB OF ENDING OUR OWN WORLD. I DARE SAY WITH SORROW, PLANET EARTH, MAY FARE BETTER WITH-OUT US. MEANING MANKINDS DISCONTENT AND LACK OF COMMMON-SENSE IS DESTROYING ALL LIFE ON EARTH. WE LACK IN EARTHS SURVIVAL AND OUR LIVES TOO.
