Yeah, if Richard Widmark or Edward G Robinson, or Bogart, among others, aren't in the movie, it probably wasn't from the "Golden Age".

Personally, I think "golden age" would refer best to something you'd want to see twice, as opposed to most in the last few years.
Reservoir Dogs is a good example of a great contemporary gangster film. Anything with a rapper in it is not.
