This to me is why the second amendment is so important. The government has no fear of the people in Iran, only the fear of public opinion or maybe a nasty letter from the U.N. and economic sanctions can be easily gotten around. An armed populist is a free one.

I tend to think ALL governements fear it's population not playing ball anymore, sort of an Atlas Shrugged thing, far more than an armed population.

Take N. Korea, if there was an armed rebellion in N. Korea it would be shut down by it's army, if on the other hand, there was general strike, that would spell the end of N. Korea as we know it. Force is easy to meet with force, refusal to participate is a much tougher nut to crack.

If an armed population equals a free population, why was Saddam able to maintain power in Iraq? Wasn't his a 'successful' dictatorship, in spite of the fact most households in Iraq owned at least one gun?

Saddam was able to give guns to those he was ruling over, because he had such a fantastic police state where Iraqis couldn't detect friend from foe, nor who was the real Saddam. Who knew if Saddam actually had doubles? But, if you think your dictator DOES have doubles, if might make it so you think twice about taking a shot at him.
