'Appendix: Leftwing Extremists
The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines leftwing extremists as
groups or individuals who embrace radical elements of the anarchist, animal rights, or
environmental movements and are often willing to violate the law to achieve their
objectives.
Many leftwing extremist groups are not hierarchically ordered with defined
members, leaders, or chain of command structures but operate as loosely-connected
underground movements composed of “lone wolves,” small cells, and splinter groups.
Animal rights and environmental extremists seek to end the perceived
abuse and suffering of animals and the degradation of the natural environment
perpetrated by humans.
They use non-violent and violent tactics that, at times,
violate criminal law.
Many of these extremists claim they are conducting these
activities on behalf of two of the most active groups, the Animal Liberation Front
and its sister organization, the Earth Liberation Front. Other prominent groups
include Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty; and chapters within the Animal
Defense LeagueUSPER, and Earth First!USPER.
The Anarchist extremists generally embrace a number of radical
philosophical components of anticapitalist, antiglobalization, communist,
socialist, and other movements. Anarchist groups seek abolition of social,
political, and economic hierarchies, including Western-style governments and
large business enterprises, and frequently advocate criminal actions of varying
scale and scope to accomplish their goals.
Anarchist extremist groups include entities within CrimethincUSPER, the Ruckus SocietyUSPER ,and Recreate 68 USPER."

Here is a point. I have read that there are 900,000 to a million plus people on the terrorist watch list. Does this mean that they are all terrorist or potential terrorist, no. If these individuals are legally able to own firearms in the United States then by all means they should be able to purchase them legally. Does anyone honestly believe that a serious terrorist would go through the process to legally acquired firearms or explosives. In the same note does anyone believe that being on a terrorist watch list would prevent a serious terrorist from acquiring firearms and explosives.

So, being a suspect of "thoughtcrime" can prevent you from buying a firearm?

I don't know much about Lautenberg, but he speaks more like a bolshevik than an American. Words like his make me think the world would be a better place if he was ground up and fed to maggots.
This is still America, and nobody needs people who fulfills the requirements of a protagonist in an Orwell novel around. -

You didn't even read the article, did you.

First line of the article:
"When people on the government's terrorist watch list have tried to buy guns or explosives in recent years, the government has let them the vast majority of the time."
There is no law denying gun ownership because someone is on the list. BTW, the list was largely assembled under Bush. -

Geez DaneL I can think of two murderers in recent weeks that should not have been able to buy a gun. One in fact should have been on that terrorist list but wasn't.

Tiller's murderer and the murderer of the Holocaust Museum guard. Regarding the murderer of the museum guard he was a CONVICTED FELON and should not have had access to a gun.

There have been several cases of people being denied or held up at airports because they have the same name as someone on the list.

The list is window dressing, always has been. False identities are de riguer for terrorists, especially since they KNOW a list exists. It's like seizing mail clippers and lighters--the only 'good' is a false sense of security.
I have to wonder at the 'intelligence' of our government (now and in the past). Obviously, Al Qaeda 'shot their wad' on 9-11 as far as air travel is concerned. The simple locking enforced doors that have been implemented would have been enough to prevent the strikes, and are enough going forward. The next strike will not be by air, yet that is where most resources are spent. Rail, ports, vulnerable chemical plants and cyber attacks.

"From February 2004 to February 2009, 963 background checks using the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System "resulted in valid matches with terrorist watch list records; of these matches, approximately 90 percent were allowed to proceed because the checks revealed no prohibiting information," the GAO report says. About 10 percent were denied."

Instant Criminal Background Check System checks what? Their name
Is it possible that 2 different people have the same name?
What is the percentage of folks Id’ed at Airports as being on the “terrorist watch list”, upon further investigation are found not to be the “terrorist” they be looking for? -

"Rather, there must be a disqualifying factor (i.e., prohibiting information) pursuant to federal or state law, such as a felony conviction or illegal immigration status."
Reply
Two with the same name is not a disqualifier for anything. And shouldn’t be a disqualifier for anything. What it IS and SHOULD be is a RED FLAG!
"Of the 963 background checks, 865 were allowed to proceed, and 98 were denied, the report said".
Were the 865 allowed to proceed because they were not the “terrorist” on the list ie: they have the same name as the terrorist?
Of the 98 that were denied, was it because they “ACTUALLY” were the “terrorist on the list” or was it because they had something else on their record like a felony conviction or illegal immigration status?
"The GAO provided the report in response to a request from Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-New Jersey. The GAO said Lautenberg had requested an update to a 2005 report."
Wild guess here Sen. Frank Lautenberg is pro gun control? -

"In a statement Monday, Lautenberg said, "this new report is proof positive that known and suspected terrorists are exploiting a major loophole in our law, threatening our families and our communities. This 'terror gap' has been open too long, and our national security demands that we shut it down."
Reply
The statement said Lautenberg is introducing legislation that would give the U.S. attorney general "authority to stop the sale of guns or explosives to terrorists."
Ah, no it is not “proof positive” of anything other than 2 different people can have the same name or according to the GAO, “The GAO notes that being on a terrorist watch list does not mean that someone is involved in any terrorist activity"
"Last month, the Justice Department reported that the FBI had kept thousands of names on its watch list based on outdated information and should have removed them.” -

“as is, any terrorist can walk into a gun show and walk out with a gun (or 10 guns) without any record of the transaction, without any ability of the authorities to track just where that gun went.
and thats just stupid.”
Please give some facts to back this up or are you just lying? -

So Beau7890, are we to understand that you whole-heartedly support DENYING people who have NEVER COMMITTED ANY CRIME their basic rights?
“ being on the terrorist watch list's ability to buy guns?””
Beau7890, if your name “appeared” on a “terrorist watch list”, and you not a terrorist, should YOUR RIGHT to buy a gun be denied?
Beau7890, if your name “appeared” on a “terrorist watch list”, and you not a terrorist, should YOUR RIGHT fly on an airliner be denied?
Beau7890, did you read the whole article? Did you notice that the GAO said:
“The GAO notes that being on a terrorist watch list does not mean that someone is involved in any terrorist activity.”
Beau, do you understand what that GAO statement means?
Obviously not, other wise you would have never jumped to the conclusion that terrorist are legally buying gun.
BTW why would a TERRORIST go through the all trouble to LEGALLY buy a gun? -
