Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness,” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases, such as interracial pregnancies.
“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding: “Or a rape.”

Well this was some 36 years ago and shortly after interracial marriage became legal for many but still. Is this a former President talking or Archie Bunker? As a teenager my mind certainly was not thinking this way and I grew up in the south.

Among the other revelations of these newly released Nixon tapes:
--Nixon told Billy Graham Jews "have a death wish. You know that's been the problem with our Jewish friends for centuries."
--Ronald Reagan told the White House the Saturday Night Massacre (in which Nixon fired the Attorney General and his deputy for refusing to dismiss the special prosecutor looking into Watergate) was "probably the best thing that ever happened"
--Nixon and Chuck Colson discussed granting clemency to E. Howard Hunt for his role in the Watergate break-in
--Nixon told then Secretary of State Kissinger to tell Vietnamese President Thieu he'd "cut off his head if necessary" to get him to sign the agreement ending the war in Vietnam. -

Nixon invented the southern strategy, it's no accident he worked it into his abortion philosophy. Its all a mind game selling identity politics to cracker trailer trash getting them to vote for the rich, f..ing themselves in the process.

Funny how the cons flip flop in the wind, cons never gave abortion a second thought until Reagan and his evangelical teliban added it to their southern strategy.
Now we have Jeb Con Bush calling a special session for Terry Shivo, the brain dead wife, in the face of decades of legal precident. Cause Jeb Bush respects life, and cons are virtous manifestation of the floating baby jesus, all the 1% super class rich are chosen by baby jesus to be rich from their virtue and hard work. Take Paris Hilton for instance. -

Nixon was a very flawed man. I supported Nixon on his stance on ending the Vietnam War but was disillusioned very quickly. We all should have learned from his, "I'm not a crook speech." He was a crook. But he started the long tradition of presidents staring into the camera and lying, through their teeth, to the American media and public.
