    J. Corbett Dooren in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL (June 17) cites the many new actions and the worries of some observers about a too aggressive FDA. They may act to slow new methodologies from coming out for needed treatments>>>>>

People need to hold on before they jump on the bandwagon that this writer is attempting to build. The Wall Street Journal has been sold to Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch represents the big boys who might lose a lot of $$$$$$ with an FDA that carefully scrutinizes their research before unleashing drugs in the marketplace, food for our consumption, or prostheses to rebuild bodies.
Anyone remember the largest meat recall in US history under bush's FDA? Bush's FDA actually allowed some "downed cows" into our food supply, & only after someone released a video of the practice did the recall happen. Obama has banned the slaughter and introduction into our food supply of all sick and downed cows.
Remember those who died and were sickened by tainted peanuts? Those sickened & those who died from tainted spinach? How about the tainted onions? The bush administration slashed funding and staffing to the FDA. Of the 150,000 food processing plants in our country only FIVE % were inspected every year. (continued)

Obama has requested one billion from Congress to help get the FDA rebuilt, after the dismantling by bush's administration. Not a lot in the scheme of things. He wants labs updated for research on new drugs that are introduced (which would actually expedite the process of checking new drugs, not slow it down as the writer suggests). And he wants more inspectors on the ground checking out the companies that bring food to our tables.
The appointments bush made to 'his' FDA were political ones. Daniel Troy, the agencies chief council, was a staunch free market advocate and member of the federalist society. (these are the guys who don't believe in regulation, but figure if someone introduces a product that kills or sickens people then citizens can just quit buying their product. No prob if someone dies in the meanwhile).
Then there's Dr. W. David Hager, whom bush wanted to head up the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory committee at the FDA. Hager is a fundamentalist who wrote a book about Jesus and women's sexual responsibilities. He refused as an OB GYN to prescribe contraception to single women, and worked to ban the 'morning after pill' (mifepristone) on religious grounds. Never mind that mifepristone showed promise in research for the healing of disorders. (continued)

I'm sorry that I don't have a one liner to comete with "They may act to slow new methodologies from coming out for needed treatments". THAT is what will stick in the minds of reactionaries. This darned critical thinking is so wordy, it gets in the way of progress.

Don't feel too sorry for those poor snake oil sales people who thrived under the deregulatory environment of the past few years. They will just move on to other scams - hopefully ones that do not endanger public health.

It is nice to see a return to objectivity in the FDA as opposed to religious doctrine (e.g. the appointment of Hager that jordan mentioned).

I used Zicam extensively and had no problems. It really worked for me. A few people to whom I recommended it did have an issue with Zicam - they tried to snort it! Zicam is meant to rest inside the entrance of your nostrils and absorb through the nostril membranes.

The good news: the neural cells responsible for smelling are the only neural cells that will reproduce and repair themselves.

Fda and usda should all be fired or in jail.

Vioxx and celebrex alone killed 63,000 people yet the pill attorneys in court stated these pills were for srthritis and these people died of heart attacks.

It is a proven fact pills approve d by usda and fda cost millions.
it also facts that estimated 60 % of pill stock is owned by usda nd fda. this is double jeaopardy and should be illegal.

aspirins alone are responsible for 1/3 of hospital emergency visits.

It could be you or your baby next take a pill and die or live in diapers having someone wipe your ass daily.

SOmeone should be jail for murder and obama is not going to fix this.
Read my book... cures for the sick n tired its shocking.
