This case highlights the disconnect that exists on many fronts between the GOP platform of "family values" and reality.

Perhaps the solution is not to chastise Sanford's actions, but rather to change those GOP fictions that do not jive with reality.-

Not only that, but also the disconnect from responsability towards his position as leader of state. Having an affair is one thing, but basically he abandoned his office, without leaving a clearly identified responsible person in charge, should a major issue had come forth during his abscense. This guy isn't fit to hold any political office.

Their plattform of family values, have by now taken so many hits from conservatives in high positions, that one has to discount the occasional isolated cases, that happens at all levels of society, regardless of status in life and political afiliation. This is now beginning to look like a trend, in the conservative ranks. To put it mildly, its troubling. -

Are you saying that the Democrat platform is about "If it feels good do it"? Family matters are not considered? Other people are not considered? I guess so because with Clinton guilty of sexual harassment, perjury, and conspiracy to commit perjury; the liberals backed him to the utmost. The phrase "consenting sex" was used over and over ignoring that in an organization it is sexual harassment even if the lower echelon person begged for it. Liberals always ignored that. NOW got that law passed almost everywhere and then stood mute when their boy Bill did it.

If a Democrat does something liberals ignore and many times praise them, like for Gary Studds.
If a Republican does something the sky has fallen.

"But in acknowledging his infidelity, Sanford was actually admitting that he had broken a state law: adultery is still punishable in South Carolina by up to a year in prison and a $500 fine."

That law is a relic and should have been repealed a long time ago.
Sanford knew what the consequences for his actions would most likely be and knew what his religion demands but his self control was sent packing and he acted on his religiously repressed emotions. -

It is my hope that Mrs. Sanford will be the first political wife to really mean it when she states that she wish to "maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong."
There are so many young women in our society who continually try to reconnect with such husbands as Governor Sanford. Consequently, it only emboldens these types of husbands, but more importantly, it sends the wrong type of message to women that cheating and disrespectfulness are acceptable.
Mrs. Sanford stated that she had already seeked reconciliation through forgiveness. (I am sure we can all understand as humans why Mrs. Sanford would want to maintain her marriage.) Yet, Governor Sanford still chose to continue the affair.
Unequivocally, if Mrs. Sanford does not treat herself with dignity now, her children will only grow up to be disrespectful of her in the future. -

Maybe it is because this is another of the repugs that voted to impeach Bill Clinton spouting his "Family Values" bs and we find out he is human too. If your going to ACT like your so moral and self righteous then maybe you need to be.

both spitzer's and clinton's shenanigans did damage, not only to the democratic party, but also to the country. clinton's lie and inability to "man up" hamstrung the remainder of his administration and probably helped gore lose the 2000 election.
Reply
and spitzer...he should be on the front line battling corporate corruption during this economic overhaul, instead of twiddling his...well, whatever.
it's too bad that good politicians as well as bad are brought down by stupid sex scandals. i'd much prefer an electorate that cares more about public policies and democratic processes and less about whos' blowing or getting blown by whom.

libs think they are in the clear since spitzer never went on a 4-day hiatus.

that's apparently all the difference anyone needs to straw man the party.
"yes, he used taxpayer dollars to cheat on his wife with call girls, but at least he had the decency to call in. clearly we are the superior ones around here, eh, charlie?"
