The answer is simple. No bans - just a choice.

    FTA:

When President Obama visited Normandy earlier this month, he was asked about his views on the French ban on head scarves. He reiterated what he had said in his speech in Cairo, that "in the United States our basic attitude is that we're not going to tell people what to wear."

There is a problem with people hiding their identity and committing crimes in some areas, so stores and banks may lock doors, especially at night, and only allow entrance to people who can be easily identified on video. Banks do allow people with religious convention issues to go to another room where they are viewed by same-sex individuals for identification purposes.

Otherwise, I don't personally care what people wear--as long as they are clear it's their choice. If women want to be covered in black head to toe, then by all means, go for it. But recognize that business-owners and banks have a valid reason to deny entry if one hides his or her identity.

The Muslims are outraged by these practices, and I'm sure the courts will have to settle the matter.

I read about when men took their case to the Supreme Court of the US to be able to bare their chests in public. Until recently, even a nursing mother was summarily arrested for indecent exposure, although one could make the argument nursing women are the only group with a valid reason for baring their chests in public.

I suspect what President Obama really means is "as long as it doesn't undercut current U.S. cultural convention." A group of topless women walking down a DC street would be arrested. Period. But a group of topless men wouldn't even attract much notice.
