Global Warming Consensus Collapsing. Vote Looms. »
Posted By btatman22 5 months, 2 weeks ago in Political OpinionSome 700 scientists have now come out against the notion of man-made global warming. That is nearly 13 times the number of scientists who authored the U.N.’s 2007 climate summary for policy makers. As the tide begins to turn on the global warming debate, with the number of skeptics rising instead of falling, the Obama administration knows that its only chance of passing the cap and trade energy tax bill is right now. That is why the Democrats are shoe-horning it through the House of Representatives right now.

And I heard about those "500 scientists" a few years ago. Turns out that a good 75 or more of them didn't even know their names were on the list and asked to have them removed immediately. Why is this important you ask, it's only 20% that's still 400 against. It's important because when 20% of your list is called into question, it destroys the integrity of the rest on the list. "Oh you could only find this many people so you had to make up that a bunch of people support it who don't?" "What kind of people are on this list if a fifth of them didn't even belong there, what's that say about the rest?"

Fortunately, this type of Luddite personality can be described as "Grumpy Old Folks" ... as they die off in succession ... our Nation can begin to move forward in a socially conscious manner ... with Environmental Awareness ... and an Acceptance of our Responsibility for future generations.
Reply
These older people simply cannot fathom the complexities of Global Warming.
Of course, this is one more reason why I have such hope for our nation ... as more and more young people recognize the sheer lunacy and blindness of these geezerly old folks .... and ... embrace a Socially Conscious and Environmentally Conscious lifestyle.
.
Right now ... this Luddite Movement is a millstone around the neck of our nation ... as this type of person has been a millstone around EVERY nation.

Climate Change: Some Winds Decreasing Across United States
ScienceDaily (June 26, 2009) — Declining wind speeds in parts of the United States could impact more than the wind power industry, say Iowa State University climate researcher

Ancient Climate Change: When Palm Trees Gave Way To Spruce Trees
ScienceDaily (June 25, 2009) — For climatologists, part of the challenge in predicting the future is figuring out exactly what happened during previous periods of global climate change.
One long-standing climate puzzle relates to a sequence of events 33.5 million years ago in the Late Eocene and Early Oligocene. Profound changes were underway. Globally, carbon dioxide levels were falling and the hothouse warmth of the dinosaur age and Eocene Period was waning. In Antarctica, ice sheets had formed and covered much of the southern polar continent.
But what exactly was happening on land, in northern latitudes? When and how did Northern glaciation begin, and what does this knowledge add to the understanding of the relationship between carbon dioxide levels and today's climate?-

klarissa, which side are you on?

do you realize that the article you lead us to in Science Daily actually says that the probable reason the winds are changing is due to global warming?
go to the end of the story, where it says that one of the scientists leading the srtudy, Ray Arritt, thinks his findings appear to support theories that climate change could affect surface winds.
AND, since you're so into Science Daily as a reputable source, check out this article from them from a month ago:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/09051...
the title of the article: Climate Change Odds Much Worse Than Thought
in the article they have two charts depicting researchers' estimation of the range of probability of potential global temperature change over the next 100 years.
one chart shows what will happen if we do nothing (your plan) and if no policy change is enacted on curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
The other chart, on the left, shows what will happen to global temperatures if aggressive policies are enacted to counter greenhouse gas emissions.
science daily says, very clearly, that global warming is real and that we need to do something, fast.
go ahead, google "science daily global warming" and see just how many articles pop up from them saying global warming is real and needs serious action.
or stick with your current plan and keep your head buried deep in the sand. -

Wow, 700 scientists you say? Which scientists? What are their specialties? Why do they think Global warming due to anthropogenic causes is false or junk science? This article is long on assumptions and real short on facts. The bottom line is that we have a Democrat in the White House and a Democratically controlled house and you cons don't like that, so what ever the Government does you won't like it, even if it's what is good for the country. That is the crux of the situation and many people realize it. Keep it up and you'll be marginalized even further, I hope although one should never underestimate the American voter they did elect Bush twice.

The number of skeptics, far from shrinking, is swelling. Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe now counts more than 700 scientists who disagree with the U.N. -- 13 times the number who authored the U.N.'s 2007 climate summary for policymakers. Joanne Simpson, the world's first woman to receive a Ph.D. in meteorology, expressed relief upon her retirement last year that she was finally free to speak "frankly" of her nonbelief. Dr. Kiminori Itoh, a Japanese environmental physical chemist who contributed to a U.N. climate report, dubs man-made warming "the worst scientific scandal in history." Norway's Ivar Giaever, Nobel Prize winner for physics, decries it as the "new religion." A group of 54 noted physicists, led by Princeton's Will Happer, is demanding the American Physical Society revise its position that the science is settled. (Both Nature and Science magazines have refused to run the physicists' open letter.)

If you REALLY cared about the climate, you would do the right thing and support research into the past events to see if we can decipher what was going on during the cooling and heating cycles.
Instead, all I hear is spin, spin, spin. To bad that your schooling was so bad that you did not learn about the scientific method. At this point, nothing is certain about the heating and cooling of the climate.

Explain how you base this whole concept with 120 years of information. 5 billion year old planet, 120 years. That well below your room for error. Explain how you over came that and prove to me it's really happening. We're actually seeing a cooling but I'll give you a little room. Prove to me conclusively that this is real.

um, yeah, thats because there's only so many people who could actually sign the UN climate summary. it wasn't an exercise in quantitative signature gathering.
and still, over 2500 scientists signed the IPCC documnet saying global warming is real and at least partially man-made.
which is about 3.5 times the number of people who have supposedly come out against cliamte change.
so, according to the measuring stick this article is using, that means global warming is real and man-made.
way to shoot yourselves in the foot.-

I think that we don't know enough to take action beyond be careful consumers and do our best not to be destructive of our planet.
I am NOT AFRAID to share information that I think will, perhaps, open our minds to new information. It may be that methane is worse than Co2??
It may be that El Nino so shifts rainfall that it greatly affects the collection of gases??
I put up an article, also from Science news, that described real scientists' core drilling that showed a lot of climate changes.
Here are several submissions ( some on here will say they aren't valid???? because they don't fit the current political opinion?}

I particularly like this one because of the crew that did this research.
"A scientific research cruise following the palaeo-equator has uncovered nearly 53 million years of climate and ocean acidification history. Three scientists from the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton were onboard.
Onboard were 29 scientists from seven nations, 25 technicians, and an international crew of 66." -

I'm not sure there ever was a serious scientific report that blamed Human Caused Global Warming for the rising temperatures.
Reply
I've said many times on here that the supposedly Scientific Report only said that Global Warming is occurring. The Politicians then struck up with the mainstream media the hype that Scientists are blaming the rise in temperatures on human input to the atmosphere.
I posted a link in here a few weeks ago that showed that the human contribution to Global Warming is less than 3%. These things weren't heavily reported because for several years now the scheme of Politicians was to extend control thru regulation of industrial affluent.
Global warming is occurring but human activity has little to do with it, therefore regulating human activity isn't going to accomplish much except give politicians more power over our everyday lives.
This doesn't mean we shouldn't try to minimize our poisoning of the atmosphere, it just means that our influence on GB is minimal.
I fully expect the trend to tip to cooling soon if it hasn't already. By the way that graph linked above is one that shows the rise in temperature since the end of the Little Ice Age that ran from about 1300 to 1800. I would expect a warming trend when coming out of an Ice Age.-

This whole farce of a bill is for one thing only, increased government revenue and as a side note, increased government control of our lives. Take your pick, communism or fascism is on its way.
It's funny that no one, and I mean no one, here has discussed the benefits of global warming on this thread. There are benefits you know. The mantra that global warming is BAD has become a religion and no one is allowed to contradict the dogma surrounding it.
Just in my area of the country, i.e. the central plains, a 4 degree rise in average temperature wouldn't be a bad thing. An increased growing season would certainly lead to increased food production. Places like South Dakota could grow more than just hard red winter wheat. In essence, Oklahoma would become like central Texas, Kansas/Nebraska more like Oklahoma, and South/North Dakota more like Kansas/Nebraska. Is this a bad thing?
Sure, the very southern tier of states might lose their advantage of being good places to live and retire to. So that is a con, but do the pros outweigh the cons? Sure rainfall might be affected in the central plains, but to what extent?
As to the science, when the models used for predicting the future can also accurately forecast the past (by putting the data in backwards) THEN I'll believe the scientists have a good handle on the processes at work in our climate. At that point, perhaps we'll have a better idea of what is happening. Until then, predictions are more conjecture than truth.
I believe we should be discussing and implementing mitigation of the effects of global warming, regardless of the reason. This would have us covered regardless of the reason for it occurring. Something like using eminent domain to begin taking beach property into public ownership. This would give government the ability to generate revenue through leases/rentals while limiting passing the property on to heirs. If the property should be flooded then it will become just like land covered by the ocean today.

Damn right it's controversial when people like you keep trying to "debate" rather than DO something you bet it's controversial. The time for debate was in the 1800s, it's 2009, the scoop is pretty much out. Come back when you have CONCLUSIVE DATA, not just 700 scientists signing onto a statement. I want published work, 300-500 page reports from each of them. MATCH the data we have FOR global warming caused by man, AGAINST it. THEN we'll be more inclined to believe you.

My Fellow Americans: After Antibrainwashers prose from the rubber room I'm starting to realize just what sort of Damocratic lunatics have been dumbing up this site. Global warming or not global warming is an issue that the house and senate are voting on with actual support from supposed scientist? Yes, we should all worry about Global Warming because every car I touch that is exposed to the hot sun I burn my hand on. Yeh, most assuredly it is getting hotter in this state of Nevada.
What are we going to do? Don't worry my friends our President can solve ever stinking problem. The answer is simple. He says "it is to pay higher taxes". He says, "we will just pile all that tax money up and block out the sun and then let the money absorb the dangerous chemicals from the atmosphere". We will get rid of all this polluted money by sending it to his friends in Iran. What a genius. Let's vote for him again next time.
He's my favorite President of all time. Why? Because I have never live in the streets in shear poverty before and I can't wait for this new changing experience. Are you with me Damocrats?
