Angela Merkel and Gordon Brown can apply pressure on Iran in ways that the US cannot. For many years, Iran has had a better relationship, based in part on their history with Germany than with the United States. Germany has considerable political capital and clout.

In like manner, Germany has considerable financial clout and can work with President Obama to find solutions to the global financial crises that have shaken the credit and bonds markets. I highly doubt that Merkel and Obama will make much headway toward solving the financial problems in both countries, but they will urge one another to bolder and more assertive in areas in which they are each seen as weak. Merkel will be encouraged to step up Germany's efforts to pour more money into the economy. Meanwhile, she will be critical of Obama's stance toward Iran. Up to this point, Germany and other G8 nations have insisted that Iran have a full recount of all its ballots.
