Health Care Crisis - Real Health Care Stories »
Posted By bubba2 4 months, 1 week ago in Health & FitnessThese stories — told by hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans who have watched their premiums rise faster than wages, and spiraling costs shackle American businesses — put a personal touch on the health care crisis.
"I am a social worker/psychotherapist living in the rural southwest. Every day I see people who are living in poverty because they have had to sell everything they owned to pay for their medical care. Over the years diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, Parkinson's, Lupus, advanced Diabetes, AIDs and many Cancer's leave their victims unable to work, without insurance and yet needing costly care."
"I am a single parent who was layed off from Bank of America in 2007. I was offered to stay on the company's medical plan but the premium was over $1300 a month. So I opted for COBRA as it was $770 a month. After Cobra ran out, I was denied medical insurance for pre-existing conditions. I had paid medical premiums non-stop for 40 years and now I cannot get quality medical insurance."
"I'm a 36-year-old American who was diagnosed with a blood cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma last year and received "R-CHOP" chemotherapy treatment in Japan. What had cost me approximately $9000 (with me paying 30% and the Japanese government covering the other 70% under its National Health Insurance program) would have cost in the US up to $125,000 - $250,000!!!!! One of the drugs, Rituxan, which made up most of the cost, $7,200 for 8 injections at $900 each time would have cost $15,000 for each injection at my local (home) hospital."
"I am writing about my niece and her husband. Jeff and Jordan. She works 32 hours per week and does not have health coverage available. She works as a customer service person at a grocery store. Her husband works full time as a cook for a hospital. He makes less than ten dollars per hour. He is a professional chef by trade. He carries the family health care and pays one hundred dollar per week! Out of a forty hour week at less than ten dollars/hour, this is roughly one quarter of his income that leaves little to live on after taxes."

I'm 48 years old and the sole support of my children (5, with 3 at home). I've usually worked in small businesses that couldn't afford health care. The few times it was offered at larger businesses, I couldn't afford it.

Two months ago, I was diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer. Now, they offer me Medicaid! How stupid is it that you have to have a mortal illness in order to get health care?!
