Gay Bar in Fort Worth Raided »

Posted By Spadecaller 4 months, 1 week ago in Political News

Early Monday morning a new LGBT club in Fort Worth was raided by Fort Worth police, to which reports indicate that one individual arrested suffered a fractured skull. Eyewitness reports suggest that anywhere between 10-20 were arrested. This activity occurs on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall protests in New York where gays and lesbians protested harassment by police and began the modern gay rights movement.

Why on the 40th anniversary of Stonewall? The message is becoming louder and clearer in this nation; right wing extremist groups are choosing to lash out against their preferred targets of hatred; Jews, blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, women rights activists, and gays. Since the election of Barack Obama, the use of domestic terrorism against these targets has increased dramatically. Hate crime in the United States must be addressed openly and promptly.

Not enough information to base an informative opinion except to say I am not surprised it happen in Fort Worth, Texas.

Why the raid? What actions did the police take and were they reasonable? What were the arrests for? So many questions unanswered. Will wait for further development.

I wonder if all questions will be answered. On the surface this sounds like a terrible injustice brought upon the gay community by an overzealous and bigoted police force. This in and of it's self would not be surprising in the great state of Texas but I would hope that there was some legal reason that this raid happened.

To be honest, although more information is definitely needed to determine the true nature of this attack on the gay community, I am somewhat familiar with the Fort Worth area and the police do not have a reputation of fairness. For that reason some of my comments are premature and although I hope I am wrong, I suspect that they will be proven correct. Let's see...

We have certainly entered a period in history since the election of our first black president that has stimulated the worst characteristics shared by those who were already predisposed to racial bigotry. Should it be surprising that those who are contemptuous of other minorities are not also reacting to a new world where those that were once marginalized are now in the forefront of change - change that is perceived as a threat to extremist right wing ideologues.

Among the people who are most threatened by the greater involvement and political inclusion of these newcomers and former outsiders, are those who were once the first to tell them, "love it or leave it."

To now have these same people echoing those harsh words back at them may well be beyond their ability to accept peacefully. Outrage, bigotry, and fear coupled with hard economic times have sparked a reactionary force that must be addressed. The volatile ingredients that are mixing into this huge cauldron of discontent are indeed unpleasant to look upon, but any excuse for avoiding this task is a poor one.

I can't go along that the raid was done for "no reason" without more information, but I do have to ask what the odds are that the raid would be conducted on the anniversary of Stonewall. It shouldn't take long to release the reasons for the raid. If that doesn't happen, then I'd say it's time to be outraged.

The Fort Worth police have not commented on the specifics of the raid, but a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission spokeswoman, Carolyn Beck, confirmed to a Dallas Observer reporter, Robert Wilonsky, that TABC agents were on the scene.

“There were TABC agents there, but other than that I don't know anything,” she said.

According to emails published by the Dallas Voice, the police appeared unannounced with paddy wagons in tow. Several people at the bar told the paper that the officers abused patrons. Another report indicates that one man has been hospitalized after suffering critical injuries during the raid.

“They [police officers] asked this guy if he had been drinking, and he said 'some', and they snidely replied, 'Well, we'll see how much!' and plastic handcuffed him as they read him his rights,” Kayla Lane, an eye witness wrote in one of the emails. “It was utterly repugnant."

When I post a story, I usually read as many other version as are available. I read nearly 37 similar versions. In each, witnesses agree that the conduct of the police was out of line and clearly abusive.

Inquiries made to the Fort Worth police dept.have received no cooperation and/or information.

There was no article suggesting that gays were using the place as a front for buying and selling children for sex slaves. Squash that rumor quick!

Frankly, pschoHose...that comment was unnecessary and should have never been made in the first place. Perhaps that is your way of expressing your frustration with the unanswered questions. You might want to reconsider using those kinds of methods; they only hurt people and confuse the issues more.

I think a better way is to study the incident and find out who is preventing the information from being released - if it is important enough for you. The civil rights of all people in this nation are important; and that is why I posted this story.

It didn't take me even 2 minutes to find out that the police department is refusing to discuss this issue at this point in time. That usually is the beginning of damage control; of course, that is only a prediction based on usual and customary behavior of police departments seeking time to address a big mistake. I think this is a serious breach of the laws. I suspect it was, in fact, a hate crime perpetrated by the Forth Worth Police department. That is my most educated opinion based on the facts available at this point in time.

After another incredibly gay pride day in Toronto, it's so disturbing to read this.

Here is a link to the local news from Fort Worth/Dallas area. According to the article, 6 police and 2 Texas alcohol agents of some sort arrived to conduct a scheduled inspection.

6 police as part of a scheduled inspection? I am not from Texas, but doesn't that sound a bit much? I am not buying it, sounds more than fishy to me.
