It's already being tipped as "the ringtone of choice among hip literary types this summer": a short dance mix featuring Philip Roth doing some "Jewish shouting".

The mix was created by writer and critic James Marcus after he interviewed Roth about his latest novel, Indignation, for the LA Times last September. During the course of the interview, Marcus asked Roth what he thought of the film version of Portnoy's Complaint, and was told it was "unspeakable". "It's a movie about shouting. Jewish shouting... often the source of embarrassment among members in Jewish families or grave misunderstanding by people completely unfamiliar with the phenomenon.

        Hilarious!

...and I agree with Roth's assessment of the "Portnoy's Complaint" film--despite the outstanding cast, it was no "Goodbye, Columbus".

If I were Phipps in the position of having to review a Philip Roth book I would hope that was a grade that read, instead of C+: "Like almost everyone else out there, I am hopelessly unqualified to judge the work of Philip Roth and probably didn't understand it at all, but this one didn't really work for me".
