I have traveled extensively and have seen some beautiful mosques (my favorite being the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem) and some beautiful cathedrals.

The mosques are mostly adorned with mosaics; the cathedrals are mostly adorned with goldleaf. The mosques are mostly built of stucco, while the cathedrals are built with massive stones.
The cathedrals are obviously much more expensive to build, not to mention the amount of work necessary to build them. Some of them took hundreds of years to build. -
