Compared to 33 deaths by dog attacks in 2007 alone. I've see so many comments of people saying that snakes shouldn't be allowed as pets because of things like this. But why don't they say the same thing about dogs? The answer is because the animals have a horrible public perception. In fables, stories, folk tales, etc, snakes are portrayed as evil, blood thirst creatures. You should avoid them at all costs and they're just going to kill you. This couldn't be any further from the truth. Even the largest snakes, Anacondas, Reticulated Pythons etc. don't view humans as prey. Yes there are cases of these snakes killing people, but its very rare.
Yes this story is sad, any loss of life that could have been prevented is, especially when it concerns a child. But a lot of the responses I've read seem to be from people who are misinformed about the animals.

DON'T bring species in that should be left in the jungle.

I'm sorry for the children but it's like have a pet 6 or 7 foot crocodile. Some kid or their dog will eventually be eaten.
I feel sorry for the poor snake who was just doing what GOD programed him to do and got imprisoned and killed for it. -

actually the snake did not die, as of today's news report. I have no sympathy for the owner of the snake. The mother in this case made a choice to allow her boyfriend to live in the house with an exotic animal. He more than likely pressed her on this issue saying how safe it was and handled him in front of her to show his ability to control the animal. The Burmese Python is a very unpredictable species and should never be kept as a pet. The owner should face charges of stupidity punishable by always being known as the moron who caused the death of this child. "life"

I had a friend who was walking in a meadow and felt something hit the side of his boot. He looked down and saw a rattle snake. Guess what he did? He took it home and turned it into a "pet" by putting it in a fish tank without water. He thought there was NO way the thing could get out, but, one day he came home from school and discovered it gone. He looked all over his room for it, then heard a rattling sound in his living room. The thing was all coiled up and ready to strike the family cat. Well, he didn't kill it. Instead, he returned it out into the meadow he found it in. By the way, this friend of mine is now a multi-millionaire (for making safer playground equipment after witnessing the death of a kid cracking his head open on some monkey bars AS a kid). Back then, he was like the biggest pot-head I had ever known.
