Helen Thomas: Not Even Nixon Tried to Control the Media Like Obama »
Posted By lovemylibs 4 months, 1 week ago in Political OpinionFollowing a testy exchange during today's briefing with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas told CNSNews.com that not even Richard Nixon tried to control the press the way President Obama is trying to control the press.

Interesting ... one of the Grand Poobahs of Modern Republican's Blessed Sacrament ... The Liberal Media Mantra ... is ... NOW ... quoting Helen Thomas ...
Reply
We all know Helen Thomas as one of the main targets of the Right ...
Here's how they NORMALLY perceive her. . . .
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://uglydem...
Of course ... as we all know ... that whole Liberal Media Mantra is just Smoke and Mirrors ... or ... Incense and Chants ... whatever works.
However y'all play it ... it's nice to see Helen Thomas being quoted by the Right here on Propeller.
Those of us who understand Mainstream Media ... recognize objectivity for what it is ... being objective to BOTH Left and Right.
Whereas ... those who mythologize Mainstream Media as some Vast Liberal Conspiracy ... become weak in the knees at every criticism ... and shout ... 'THEY'RE OUT TO GET US!"
.
Thanks lovemylibs ... I'll treasure this story submission of yours.
.

Ooops ... sorry y'all ... Had dinner with the family ... and when I came back ... I happened to see that the link I posted didn't work out so well.
Reply
It was a link to caricatures of Helen Thomas that Right Wing Media had created to demonize Helen Thomas ... making her look like a monster.
Here's another link ... it's one of the Main Spokespeople for the Modern Republican Movement ... http://www.politicsdaily.com/2009/02/12/moron-bill...
See?
Here's the deal ... mature people accept that Media is there to keep our politician's feet to the fire.
Helen Thomas has always been very good at this.
But that's EXACTLY what followers of Right Wing Ideology HATED about Helen Thomas ... UNTIL NOW!
See ... The Modern Republican Movement is an immature Ideology. So insecure ... and so aware of it's own Moral Vacancy ... it over-reacts to ANY criticism ... and DEMONIZES the messengers who bring that criticism.
UNTIL ... until the day comes when those DEMONS ... criticize one who they hate.
Get it?
Not only is the Ideology immature ... it doesn't stand for ANYTHING of substance.
.
.
Look ... try to understand this ... Obama is a CENTRIST ... get it?
Y'all been listening to Rush Limbaugh and pc25 ...
Any RATIONAL person would have known that HILLARY was more Liberal than Obama.
And this story submission from lovemylibs? That only PROVES it ...
But ... I doubt if even this will convince you.
.
.
Sigh ... a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Helen Thomas is a legend and bless her for doing what "the liberal media" failed to do after 9/11 and throughout the Bush administration. Ask tough questions. And could Obama have chosen a better press secretary than Robert Gibbs? This guy is suave (as opposed to slick) and I love the way he crafts his responses (and non responses) without the clipped nastiness I've grown accustomed to. To be fair, Tony Snow was also quite affable. No it's not their job to be nice but these are examples of people who can answer questions without being a-holes.

So where have Thomas and Reid been for the past 6 months because it's not like it started happening yesterday. I have not forgotten about Obama's weekly cocktail parties for the favored members of the press corp. It seems a bit late but I guess it's better late than never. Will this new questioning and skepticism of Obama last or is it just a passing thought?

There is no wiggle room on this story Jeb you are either OK with what's going on or you're outraged. What's your stance on it. Straight up, without talking about what Bush did or whether we like Helen in the past, now or in the future. It's pretty straight forward here. There is no way the tactic you are using lessens the fact that a complicit media is dangerous for we the little guys (no matter which party does it),, it just happens that current events have happened and it's happened with your guy in office let's here what your thoughts are when your guy does something for a change. A little indignation towards the current administration would be note worthy.

It is amusing that for all the carrying on about Bush having plants in his audiences and pre-screened questions, we find that attendance at Obama's town meetings is a reward for working hard on his campaign and the questions must be emailed ahead of time.
Reply
He also informs the media which of them will be called upon. It was unclear whether he is also screening their questions. This was brought out today on MSNBC, NOT Fox.-

This is a test for Dems, to be sure. Can they admit it when their own president is cutting the cheese? Can they be better and more reasonable than the republicans? Or will the two parties just continue their endless and pointless p!ssing match?

basically, the media cannot be relied on to bring us information of critical importance. even the internet murmur heavily relies on the establishment media in the first place. people praise the internet as the harbinger of a new media, as there is much to be said about the internet, but this pyramidal model of information flow to control the dialogue obstructs honest attempts at transparency. this is why even propeller often sees mainstream banter all over the front pages.

i mean look how fast everyone in this country accepted the idea that russia "invaded" georgia. well, that turned out to be a funny way to tell the story. even today, the global masses remain convinced that ahmadajad could not possibly have won the election in iran. but, there are more than plenty of legitimate reasons to believe this is what the government-controlled press only wants us to believe. i could go on, but that would detract from my point. -

this is really bad - how could any media ignore set-ups like these?

"Thomas said she was especially concerned about the arrangement between the Obama Administration and a writer from the liberal Huffington Post Web site.
The writer was invited by the White House to President Obama’s press conference last week on the understanding that he would ask Obama a question about Iran from among questions that had been sent to him by people in Iran.
“When you call the reporter the night before you know damn well what they are going to ask to control you,” Thomas said.
“I’m not saying there has never been managed news before, but this is carried to fare-thee-well--for the town halls, for the press conferences,” she said. “It’s blatant. They don’t give a damn if you know it or not. They ought to be hanging their heads in shame.” -

How about the gay or transvestite or "night-walker" or whatever he was that was allowed into the press room by the Bush administration?
Reply
Never saw or heard any of you complain about that.
And when anyone complained about how limiting and how 'nothing' the questions were that were asked of Bush about torture, warrantless wiretapping, or the war, you all condemned and ridiculed them.

Good for Helen!
It doesn't matter WHO is in the White House.
The press should be able to ask any questions and they should not have to present questions in advance and they should not be 'screened'.
Period.
But ...
Please don't forget how Helen was treated during the 8 years of W.
http://www.yuddy.com/celebrity/helen-thomas/bio
"Becoming known for her difficult, direct style of questioning she was relegated to the back of the press room at the White House and has on occasions caused a riff between herself and President G W Bush, who for three years did not call on her during briefings in retaliation for her probing questions."
And please don't forget about "Jeff Gannon" ....

You all HATED Helen when she tried to ask tough questions of Bush.
Reply
Now, all of a SUDDEN, you LOVE her?
Not to be accused of saying but your side does it too. It does seem that you hated Powell until he was against Bush. In the end when the right thing is said by any side it's still the right thing to say, regardless of the source, would you not agree?-

I didn't Hate Powell. I was disappointed with him.
Having said that about me, I can't speak for anyone that may have posted that they hated him.
I actually admire Powell for resigning after he found out that he had been lied to just like the rest of America had been lied to.
Also, I DO agree with your statement, "when the right thing is said by any side it's still the right thing to say, regardless of the source".
Thus, I will certainly be more aware of what is said/posted/commented in future when Helen questions a Republican's actions or behavior - and/or any similar situations that occur.

If this was the truth, the trend is more than dangerous. It is obvious that the press is always a factor of uncertainty for any government, but that´s their job! Maybe that this is only the top of the iceberg, and selected questions of selected journalists are already part of the political reality. A restrictive handling of this kind doesn´t fit in with the gain of "change". This is Bush-tradition at its best!
