"Since about 43 million Americans smoke, the deaths associated with cancer and smoking will far outweigh any side effects from nicotine prevention drugs."

One of the problems with this class of drugs is that many health care providers prescribe them without considering how powerful they are. Zyban is the same medication as Wellbutrin, a very powerful anti-depressant that is recommended ONLY when all other therapy fails...so if you have doctors doling this stuff out with little discretion, there are bound to be mishaps.
As with all medication - particularly those that literally alter the brains chemistry - it's vital to closely monitor an individual's reaction from start to finish...and unfortunately, most health care providers don't have the kind of time needed to do so and many patients don't have the time or money to follow-up with their doctors when hampered with side effects.
That said, smoking is about the most toxic of all habits, both for the smoker, those around them and the environment. If these meds are prescribed and taken with care, they can be very effective.-

I agree, luckily no one died while i was on chantix. It seem to have an unusual effect on me. I wasn't suicidal, I became quite the opposite. As a bartender I occasionally have drunks that want to get rowdy. I can talk them out of it most of the time. while on chantix I almost did some real damage to a few who tried me. I prefer the usual talk down. still smoking unfortunately.-

Quicksilver is right. Unfortunately doctors do not monitor the possible deadly reactions of Welbutrin and Zyban. My daughter was murdered by her new husband who was on this drug to stop smoking. She said he was acting crazy and had had no followup with the prescribing doctor for welbutrin. He became out of control with jealousy because she came to visit me and shot and killed her and himself right in front of me. I do think he was not of sound mind to begin with and the welbutrin simply pushed him over the edge.

I heard that Zyban originally was developed as an anti- depressant. During clinical trials some people who smoked stopped smoking. If I'm not mistaken the same drug has another name for use when treating depression.

We humans are like everything else here in the abode which supports life...exampled is the fact we eat and grow at a rate...as everything does...it tapers to the divine principle phi and pi....formulas that the Egyptians and all knew that long ago...are still present today. I stopped smoking by gradually stopping...adding more time between smokes...until I stopped. They gave me patches that I never needed.

I don't think one way works with everyone, thankfully there are many methods today that can help. I can't remember what they say the average number of times it usually takes a person to finally quit, I think it was 8.

First time for me and it's been 10 weeks as of yesterday, I'm pretty sure I've gotten over the real bad times, I wouldn't want to go through it again. I used the patch.
Now if I'm on my death bed??? I'm smokin!!!!!! otherwise I'm fairly certain I won't.
I can see stress in quitting being very hard on people tho...
you've got to remember all that stress, crap etc... doesn't last forever tho, if it did, nobody would be an ex smoker. -

If you have quit smoking and down the line you run into any health problems, don't even admit to once being a smoker. Once drs. & hospitals hear you once smoked is's oh, roll the eyes, and automatically, your problems is smoking related. It doesn't matter if you quit last month or 10 years ago, it's the same response & the same attitude. And to think, smoking was legal because of all the money the country made, until it started costing more money to keep us healthy...

that kinda happened to me this last Tuesday, had a new PCP put me on a med because he said, 'well with your family history and your smoking.................

I said hold up there....I said I quit 10 weeks ago, I got a 'look' like yeah..whatever!
I said I haven't smoked at all for 10 weeks and I'm a NON SMOKER!! (I was a bit put off)
he said, 'well with the amount of years you smoked...it's not really going to make a difference for quite awhile'
yeah ok Doc! what was the use of quitting then???
I'm still not smoking, but come on.......................
when someone says 'do you smoke? isn't that NO! important? if not they should ask, 'have you ever smoked'
granted my body isn't going to magically turn into the body of someone who never smoked, it'll take time, probably years.
but GEESH.............-

"There are immediate health benefits when you quit. If you quit NOW, your body begins to repair the damage done by the tobacco, your lung function will improve up to 30% within three months of quitting, and your risks of getting heart attack and cancer decrease significantly. With improved health, you will also save on medical expenditure."

Many medical systems consider a successful "quit" if you haven't smoked for 12 months. Any time less than that you are classified "smoker, recent quitter", which is a different category with a high recidivism rate. Sounds like that's what your doc is thinking, but it also doesn't sound like he communicates very well either.

Well smokers are Screwed. They Die if they smoke, and they Die quicker if they stop. I guess the Warning Label will say, " You are Damned is you Smoke these, and you are double Damned if you Stop Smoking them". I smoked when I was in the Service many years ago. Thank God I Never got the Habit. I could smoke for six or seven months, decided I was tired of smoking, and just quit. No side effect or craving. Nothing.

The title of this post is a bit misleading...it's about a particular class of prescription drugs that some use to help them quit. Their use is just one approach and for some, a great help.

I found a very effective way to stop smoking. Having the word "Cancer" come out of a Doctors mouth when I was the only other person there. Thankfully it was caught early and wasn't a very aggressive one (bladder) and required only same day surgery. It's been 5 years and I'm still clean. Unfortunately we smokers live in denial about these types of things and it takes this kind of a wake up call to make us quit. Smoking is the number one cause of bladder cancer. I didn't know that but I do now. I never found Welbutrin to be effective, never tried Chantix but had good luck with the patches and the gum. It's a very hard addiction to break as those of us who used to smoke know. Best of luck to all of you who are trying. Don't wait until you get a cancer diagnosis to do it.

I quit using Chantix, but I swear it was a very intense and potentially dangerous drug. I did not like how I felt on it at all. If you use it, get off it as soon as you can. If you have trouble with it, only stay on the starter (lower) dosage and don't step up to the full dosage. Zyban was great, but I did have side effects and had to stop. I am nearly two years cigarette free.

I think the government should concentrate on things other than people quitting smoking. Just something else for them to control. If everyone in the USA quit, they wouldn't know what to do. All the jobs lost and all those taxes lost. First it's helmets, then seatbelts, smoking, SPV's. What's next people? Quit giving up your rights for God sake

If you want to pay for your own health consequences, fine with me. Taxes from cigs DON'T cover the health costs to the government, it's still a loss even today with the very high taxes. 257 Billion in costs yearly to the society, divided by 47 Million smokers, that means you owe us about $5500 yearly more than you already pay in additional taxes if this were fair. Yes the government has a business to run, and they need to concentrate on this.
