An esoteric offering which also has a direct connection with the inception of the 30 years war and the total change of direction which emerged in Europe in the 17th Century. The drama is set in the Kingdom of Bohemia the protagonists include the Protestant Frederick of Heidelberg and his new bride, Elizabeth, the second daughter of James 1st of England who became known as the "Winter King and Queen of Bohemia, because their reign lasted little more than 1 winter - and a much wider cast of characters, even including Rene Descartes - as a foot-soldier on the Catholic side.

The Star Palace sits in a walled former hunting park. Almost directly outside the south-west corner of the park, and west of the city of Prague, on 8th November 1620, one of the earliest and most significant battles of what became the 30-years war took place, less than a year after Frederick, the Elector Palatinate, and his bride arrived in Prague, full of hope, to become the King and Queen of Bohemia. The Battle of the White Mountain had some curious aspects. Though the Catholic forces outnumbered the Protestants, the latter occupied the higher ground. According to accounts from the time a mysterious cloud appeared out of nowhere and the Catholic forces attacked under its cover. Some kind of "magical activity" has sometimes been ascribed to this phenomenon. The battle was over in 1 or 2 hours [differing versions exist] and in short order frederick and Elizabeth had to flee, making their home in exile in Holland.

      From Wikipedia:
Forty-seven noble leaders of the insurrection were tried, and twenty-seven were executed on what is called "the Day of Blood" by Protestants at Prague's Old Town Square. Today, 27 crosses have been inlaid in the cobblestone as a tribute to those victims. An estimated five-sixths of the Bohemian nobility went into exile soon after the Battle of White Mountain, and their properties were confiscated. Before the war about 151,000 farmsteads existed in Bohemia, while only 50,000 remained after the year 1648. The number of inhabitants decreased from 3 million to 800,000.

has a good review of a seminal book on the topic, "The Rosicrucian Enlightenment" by Frances Yates. FY has become a bit unfashionable lately but that does not prevent her book being an interesting read!

Just amazing. Every American should strive to see the wonders of the rest of our world. It's not possible to visit old cultures without coming home changed & with a greater appreciation of where man has been and what man has accomplished. Makes us look like the babies of the planet, with little more than 200 years in this place.

            The place is absolutely remarkable.

As I was reading the article I got a rather strange feeling that if there are places on Earth where Magic might work that place would be one of them.
