I'm not doing a tit for tat here, but we should be outraged when any of them make personal profit off of us over and beyond their salary after we entrusted them and 'allowed' them into office. More times than not these folks forget they are being 'allowed' the privilege of being in office.
Has anyone noticed just how many people in politics (on both sides) go to DC as either Middle Class or even slightly well off, only to become filthy rich?
They make a decent salary indeed, but the costs of living in DC are out the roof. Just how do these people gather such wealth?

I'm not going to go into my list your list our list here,,,,, it's just a known fact that they do it on both sides at our expense and WE have allowed it way too long.
Using OUR tax dollars to buy votes, enrich themselves from donations from others an in turn enriching the donors with lucrative contracts or legislation.
Politics is a cesspool and it's our fault. We are their enablers,,, we let them into office and more times than not give those we personally vote for pass while we focus on 'the other politician's bad behavior". They manipulate the moeny we send and spend it as if we gave them permission to use the money as if it were their own personal money.
I could go on and on,,,,,,, nut I'm going to go something much more pleasurable,,,,, play some music and get away from it all (music is my personal "Calgon" per se.

I rarely ever agree with you, but there is no denying this fact. I find it simply stunning that any politician can get away with being openly corrupt, then be easily re-elected...yet it happens all the time.
What I find even more amazing is how so many people on each side of the aisle seem to think that their politicians are -always- the good guys. I may lean towards the side of the Democrats, but I'm the first to admit that they can be just as disgustingly corrupt as any Republican can be. 8( -

Slate, I have to agree with for once! The problem, as I see it, is that our 535 elected officials in Washington are chosen to lead this country and yet we pay them less than the county administrator of my small county. It's rediculous. Only people that are already rich will run for office because the pay certainly won't sustain them. If they're NOT filthy rich already, they've got their hands out.

The way to stop it is pay the representative $2 million/year, Senators $3million/year, and the President $10million/year. Then ban any and all donations from lobbyists, etc.

That is doubtful. No matter what anyone says the major networks go by ratings. Ratings lead to sponsors and their money. Unless their sponsors object heavily (read: start pulling ads or threaten to do so) it doesn't matter whether the butt of the joke's partisanship is.
Other than that I agree that a joke like Letterman's was pretty tasteless.

When one makes knowledgeable assumptions about taxes and things politicians say about not raising them all you have to do is look to the past (remember the saying about not learning from the past and repeating it)?

You are so right. Tom Pendergrass was a perfect example, as was Mayor Daley of Chicago. While both were political heads that had machines which operated very smoothly, the fact is that Chicago and Kansas City both benefited from their existence. Question is, at what point does the city and it's residents become victims, rather than beneficiaries.

Sarah Palin may have a book contract now and may have had 15 minutes of real fame as the Republican Vice Presidential candidate, but I predict she'll fade into semi-obscurity. She has handled many things badly. She takes offense at anything that is not pro-Palin and appears quite vindictive with her revenge. You can't be so reactionary when you're running for office, for there will always be people who actually HATE you--and many who just don't "cotton to you." As tasteless as Letterman's joke was about her oldest daughter (his mistake) there was no reason for her to try to destroy him. Comedians make cruel jokes about Madonna, Liz Taylor, Paris Hilton all the time but those strong females just let it slide--not Palin. That's the difference between a real trooper and a wannabe.
