    Tilting at Windmill Jobs
The 'stimulus' promised a jobless peak of 8%; it's now 9.5%.

About the best we can say about yesterday's June jobs report is that employment is usually a lagging economic indicator. At least we hope it is, because the loss of 467,000 jobs for the month is one more sign that the economy still hasn't hit bottom despite months of epic fiscal and monetary reflation.

The report is in many ways even uglier than the headline numbers. Average hours worked per week dropped to 33, the lowest level in at least 40 years. This means that millions of full-time workers are being downgraded to part-time, as businesses slash labor costs to remain above water. Because people are working less, wages have fallen by 0.3% this year. Factories are operating at only 65% capacity, while the overall jobless rate hit 9.5%. Throw in discouraged workers who want full-time work, and the labor underutilization rate climbed to 16.5%.

Video: Gibbs tells MS-NBC that Obama’s ready to take responsibility for economy

Gee, and it only took six months! Yesterday, MS-NBC’s Chuck Todd asked White House press secretary Robert Gibbs when the time will come to judge the success of the stimulus package Barack Obama pushed Congress to pass. Gibbs says we can start now:

Unemployment system strains to deal with 14% jobless rate

Michigan's unemployment rate is above 14%, meaning 450,000 people in our state are receiving benefits.

Michigan's unemployment system is strained by the growing number of laid off workers. And things are getting worse, fast. In the recession of the 1980's it took almost two years for unemployment to climb from 10 percent to 14 percent. This time around, that jump happened in five months.

Six California cities have unemployment above 15%

Almost half of the cities with 15 percent-plus jobless rates last month were in California, with El Centro at the top of the list with a 26.8 percent unemployment rate.

Yuba City had the second-highest jobless rate in the state at 17.7 percent, while Merced, Modesto, Fresno, Redding and Stockton also endured 15 percent-plus jobless rates, according to a federal report released Tuesday.

Sacramento-area’s jobless rate reached 11.1 percent last month, 2 percentage points below the modern-day record of 11.3 percent reached in March, according to the state Employment Development Department. But the capital region is faring better than many other metropolitan areas.

Video: Colin Powell suddenly “concerned” about government spending

        Apparently Powells Obamagasm is over.........

Correction: He’s a “little concerned.” This from a guy who, not two months ago, declared that “Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less” and who even here responds to a clip of him speaking at the 1996 GOP convention by announcing, “I don’t like slogans anymore like ‘limited government’” — before proceeding to voice his worries about “additional government.”

I am also wondering where those jobs are, and I am very concerned about it, especially since I have been out of work since April 3.

I am not satisfied with what the administration is reporting so far, and other reports have noted that only about 10% of the stimulus has been spent directly on items that will create jobs.

But, to say that the stimulus bill is not working as planned is NOT to say that Obama is "TOTALLY" responsible for the current economy.

The Obama administration inherited an economic MESS built up during the Bush years.

While the Bush administration is not "totally" responsible for that mess, they most definitely were the main contributors to it over the last 8 years.

So, for you to so quickly judge after 5 months in office that Obama is "TOTALLY responsible" for the current economy really is fallacious.

It took YEARS for the economy to collapse, starting in mid-2007. It will take YEARS for the economy to recover.

Is the stimulus packaging helping or not?

So far, I am not impressed - I am concerned and worried, and I want to see more results and more accurate information from the bill and from the White House.

But, It really is too early to make 'final' judgements on the impact of the stimulus and other actions by Obama and the current Congress.

I would wager that if Obama were a Republican (or it was McCain that was in office), whatever actions were being taken that you disliked would not be judged so quickly.

The new federal budget just came into place on July 1st. None of the new administrations ideas could really be put into place before this. Bush's stuff was still there. What's more Bush's commitments are still and still will be there for many years. Of course PC@% will look for anything to knock the Obama administration, while never knocked the Bush and the GOP which brought us to this point.

        1. Bush started an unjustified war

        2. He gave tax breaks to the wealthy.

        3. He signed a medicare bill which said the government could not negotiate drug prices.

        4. He encouraged outsourcing.

        4. He gave most favored nation status to China, which is run by one of the worlds most repressive regimes.

There are more things, but PC25 wuill go on with Neocon rant.

The Republicans got us into this mess. They should just "sit on it" for at least a year, if not eight, as far as I'm concerned.

For any Neocon to criticize the Obama administration is like the officers of the Titanic criticizing the survivors in the life boats, I think. And those officers want the life boat leaders to fail. (At least the real ones went down with the ship...)

Obama unemployment at 9.5%?.... Really? Really PC?

You know? I... I think that this is Bush unemployment... yeah... I'm pretty sure actually.

But you know? Honestly? I didn't know unemployment belonged to anybody, I thought it was a state of joblessness that represented the country as a whole, not deligated to any one person. I thought that was Econ 101. Did your teachers know something the rest of us don't? Quickly, let's get them into positions of power so they can fix our 'conomy!

I'm far far FAR too busy here watching Ow, My Balls!

Why do people think that the President can control the unemployment rate?

There are so many moving parts in the economy, to try an think you can control it is impossible. There are a few things you can do to promote growth, but you have to wait for the market to react.

For the record, the stimulus bill was an immoral act. If at the end, we can say that we are energy independent, I would say it is worth it, yet not enough is being done in that regard. An no Cap and Trade is not the answer.

Obama overnighted the Stimulis bill without even reading it saying he was in a hurry to pass it.
It still has not been spent.
What was the rush and why didn't we have time to read it?
Now Cap and Trade will have jobs flying to China so fast your head will spin.
Maybe one of them will be yours.
Employers will be fined 750.00 per employee if they don't provide health insurance.
That's not exactly a job booster either.
You can't blame Bush on those blundering ideas.
Those are all on the Messiah.
I guess that's why you are all called Dumbocrats.

anyone who thought Obama could fix all this in just 5 months is an idiot.

in two years, if things look the same, if unemployment is above 10%, then you fools will have a legit gripe.

but right now, you just sound stupid if you're complaining about unemployment as if Obama could do anything to change the way it is at this point.

whats happening now is the consepquence of many years of bad decisions, piled on top of each other. it took us 8 long years to dig ourselves into this deep deep hole. its going to take us awhile to get out of it.
