Helmand is mostly a lawless region; it has no form of government and has been over-taken by the Taliban insurgents, who headquarter there.

In 2008, Afghanistan produced 93% of the world's poppy crop
for heroin production.
7,500 metric tons in 2008.*
8,200 metric tons in 2007.
*The decline in production was attributable to drought only.

The US has had too much time to stop this flow and trade of drugs...and stopped short each time...Bush got 13 billion to plant other crops, but only sent a small portion of the 13 billion before he found some reason not to again. They would leave these people in the desert...just like they are doing in South America...then hollaring! Drugs...not crops...no Olive Trees...no bio fuel for the cars they need to tax. It's sickining to watch the NSC play again like they are powerful...only at destroying things and not creating....and that's what is called lacking piety, perverted!

The US spends Billions on useless, worthless, politcal pork barrel projects, bridges to nowhere, tunnels for turtles, studying fleas; why don't we just use that money to buy up ALL the poppies-- outbid the druggies-- and eliminate the problem virtually in one year. How much could that cost? OK, we'd have to pony up plenty in the beginning but in a few years, we could drive the cartels out of business and replace the poppy crops with food crops as we're already trying to do.

Interesting. Historically, the opium poppy has funded the CIA, who uses drug money to pay for its black ops. Indeed, the third leg of the Iran Contra arms for hostages deal was alleged to be cocaine from the contras, peddled through the Crips and Bloods in Los Angeles.

My Fellow Americans: Now it's poppies, looks like a pandemic, what are we going to do? Now we are going to have hop heads everywhere, buying, selling, using. The Children, we must worry about the children, we must protect the children, we must stop the drugs coming into this country. The Afghans will be flooding these drugs across the border. What Will We Do?

Just when we had the Drug problem under Control. Well Ladies and Gentlemen in the last 5 months a new rash of drugs has been constantly filtering into the Country. As a matter of fact a great deal of money, (from the Stimulus Package), has been funding it. Bought and Paid for by you Guessed it. Why else would such off the wall projects get put before the Congress to Pass. Don't worry though, we are running out of money to pay certain bills and this one it looks like will get the Ax.
