I propped the story not so much of the safety concern but more so because I am beginning to have real problems with the whole idea of the control that some of these companies like Monsanto are having on seed. For most of these new ssed varieties that are developed a producer must sign a TUA (technology use Agreement) which states that the crop that is produces must be sold and no seed can be retained to grow another crop, this puts the producer at the disadvantage of having to buy new seed every year, as well as that they recieve a payment per acre from the producer for using that technology, usually around $14 per acre, all of these extra costs are absorbed by the producer with no guarantee of any increase in production. There is also a move by these companies to get older varieties of seeds unregistered so that if producers do grow them they are no longer marketable.

There is a move by a small group of very large companies to control the seed industry worldwide and although the new technology may have its advantages it will not be without a very high cost for initially the producer and finally the consumer.-

That said, a number of scientists attribute colony collapse disorder to the prevalence of BT corn (as the proverbial 'last straw'). Consider also that butterflies tend to die when they feed on or near BT corn crops. GMO food is questionable at best.

Monsanto is growing monstrous stuff, trying to palm it off on the poorer countries first--charging them for the grain, the Monsanto fertilizers, the Monsanto weed killers--and most of the foods Monsanto is forcing on farmers produces "frankenfood"--genetically modified stuff that has lost the food value of the original stuff from heirloom seeds--seeds which have developed their on way of life over thousands of years. If Monsanto has their way, we will no longer be able to save seeds from our crops (as so many poor farmers must do) will no longer be able to even grow from heirloom seeds. Monsanto has come up with the most depraved action of all--if a Monsanto GM plant is found in a farmer's field along with his crops, he is accused of stealing it--when it most likely got there by a seed on the wind or from a bird eating the seed and then dumping it in the farmer's field. Monsanto then takes the farmer to court, causes him to lose his crop, sometimes his land and his livelihood. How depraved can they get? Europe is resisting these frankenfoods--and we Americans should too. Monsanto needs to be brought down.
