My grandfather told me of times when rust in wheat was a problem for him many years ago, and a crop could be wiped out because of it. Varieties of wheat were developed that were resistant to rust but there are always new strains of rust showing up, so the battle goes on. The use of fungicides has helped fight some strains of rust and also are used on many crops nowdays, but a fungicide only gives you so many days of protection and then it becomes a situation where one has to decide if it is cost efficient to re-apply.
