Comments for George Will Calls Sarah Palin a Quitter »
Posted By capj71 6 months ago in NewsOn ABC’s This Week program today, conservative columnist George Will had some harsh criticism for Sarah Palin’s decision to resign from her position as Alaska governor on Friday. Will said, “Still, she made a contract with them to serve out her term. And she said, in her own words, she now is a quitter.”

As pointed out in one commentary, she used a sports metaphor (from basketball) of "passing the ball to win the game."
Reply
But another sports metaphor, a general one says "winners never quit, and quitters never win."
Is she passing the ball, or throwing in the towel?-

Say what you want (read: what Fox News said you liberals would say before you even heard the news).
Reply
As usual, Sarah nailed liberals to the wall mercilessly. You clowns haven't been able to figure her out from day one, as demonstrated by your relentless and meritless attacks on her and her children. And despite her clear outspoken principles, you still don't have a clue.
She said, repeatedly, "no more politics as usual." So what do all the court jesters across the political spectrum say? "Sarah's not doing this the way it's supposed to be done." In military parlance, we refer to this as a lethal preemptive strike.
She also said, "Only dead fish go with the flow." Right up there next to the complaint that she's not doing politics as usual is the complaint that she's not going with the flow. Gee...ya think?
There's no questioning your political metaphor. Truly, "winners never quit, and quitters never win." This may come as news to someone like Sarah Palin who has not yet begun to fight.
Do you liberals honestly want that fight now that Palin cannot be harassed by a Democratic-agitated state ethics panel? Now you can't simply dial-a-complaint to ensnare the Governor. You are dealing with a private citizen who is free to travel the nation, network, raise funds, develop a grass roots campaign--all this while waiting for the Messiah to pave her way to the White House over the bodies of the unemployed (as he's clearly intent on doing).
When Sarah Palin is sworn into office in January 2013, you liberals will have the dubious honor of looking back on your gutless, heartless, hate-filled attacks on anything and everything Sarah and have yourselves to thank for freeing her up to master the momentum YOUR MESSIAH is forfeiting to her.
Another thing about winners you ought not forget. Kerry, Bush, Clinton, Obama--all campaigned for either a nomination or an office with their cushy little governorship or senate seat as their safety net.
Sarah Palin just threw away her safety net. Now might be a good time to start taking her seriously even if you can't stand her politics.-

If the ethics issues were so pesky, why did Democrats repeatedly try so desperately to hang baseless ethics charges on her? Why the constant attacks on her and her children? Attacks you liberals would never tolerate against the children of your kind?
Reply
Interesting how your pathetic ethics rants, thrown out one by one, mean all in the world while you're feverishly conjuring them up, but the minute she shelves them and walks away, they're now merely "pesky."
Must really suck having a mere hockey mom deprive you of your one and only attack methodology. But hey...she still has kids. Do what liberals do best and go after them.-

I said nothing about her children. She dragged her children all around the country and put them on display. I kind of feel sorry for them, being used as political pawns and all. They did get to go to the lamest national political convention ever though. That has nothing to do with political ethics.

Good point, U.S.
Reply
And maybe her political days are over. Maybe I'm completely wrong and the majority of the pundits have it right. I accept that possibility. However, my point is that her lack of convention is not something she hides. She has been forthright about us "normal" people having a positive effect on the political sphere of life all along. I believe hers to be a valid principle, and I think her political opponents ignore it to their peril.

Did Bill Clinton quit when Republicans spent 8 years and millions of dollars in taxpayer money to hound him about Whitewater? Has Obama quit after the Republicans have spent all their time accusing him of everything from being a Muslim, to not being born in America, to having a homosexual relationship in a limo?
Reply
If she had nothing to hide, why did she quit?-

Excellent point. Which Republican forced Bill Clinton to commit perjury? Which Republican forced Clinton to have an affair with Lewinsky while Al Qaeda planned 9/11? Point that Republican out to me and I'll oppose him/her to the day I die.

No accusation against Obama triggered the action of an ethics panel. In Palin's case, it was an ethics panel she had a hand in creating.-

Thinking like yours is what frightens me about this country. Do you personally know without any doubt that Ms. Palin did not commit any of those acts which have been accused? Are you absolutely certain that they are all "baseless?" Because unless that is the case, it is intellectually shallow for you to attack "you Democrats" who 'waste taxpayer money with frivolous claims' because you do not know whether they are in fact baseless or not unless you are one of those people who just claim as fact what they want to believe because it supports their own sense of value and self. It would be intellectually honest and fair to support Sarah herself, mind you, if you believe she hasn't done anything improper, but it is unfair for you to judge those who inquire whether this is actually true. I hope that you can understand the distinction.

Well Tang. You know you started it. Obama runs circles around mccain and isn't even winded. The only way someone could not see that is if they were not thinking clearly. I will refrain in the future from name calling because you are correct. That is counter productive but, you are wrong. And if you still believe you are correct please provide documentation. Also if you remember at all, at that time everyone was being fed a load of crap so the belief then may have been based on incorrect information that was the norm.

In this first link you will see that Obama blasted McCain for saying that the fundamentals of the economy are strong. In March Obama talked about the fundamentally sound economy. His key advisor actually used the phrase "the fundamentals of the economy are sound."
Seriously though, you'll feel much better about yourself if you educate yourself as opposed to begging for info from others.

Helen Thomas is an old venerated reporter who has sat in the press corps for decades. She gripes and b-tches all of the time. It's how she usually gets her way. Most generally ignore her, her best years are long past and she holds an almost honorary position. She is also getting abit senile. Not Strom Thurmond senile but she does have her good and bad days.

But ask her how she is treated compared to the last 8 years? When she was shuttled to the back row and ignored by Bush on virtually every press conference. He rarely called on her and when he did he was usualy excoriated by her.

Not always. He was a proponent of the work done by Gates and Petraeus that finally made some progress in Iraq. That was the beginning of the end of neocon dominance. Cheney was severely weakened until he began acting as the rogue head of the Party by default after the election. A heinous mistake by Republicans not to distance themselves immediately from him. Instead many embraced him as an anchor. But what and who (Kristol, Limbaugh, Palin, etc.) he is anchored to is the real problem. Cheney liked being in charge although he wants nothing to do with elections (he isn't an electable type himself).

Let's face it folks, it is about money. From what I know, her family is of modest means. Over the last 9 months she has racked up $500,000 in legal bills due to frivolous ethics complaints. That means in the next 18 months she could have another $1.5 million.

Your opinion is based upon hindsight which is always 20/20. Do you really think people anticipating running for governor and/or VP should put into their calculations that they will need the financial resources to defend themselves against frivolous ethics complaints. I'll tell you right now, rich folks, very rich folks will be the only ones running for these offices if that is the case. Do you really want our government run by rich people?

oldslowjim makes a good point. The Palin's legal bills cannot be addressed by her Governor's salary.
Reply
She's very ... VERY effective as a fund raiser for the GOP. She has a very specific message that resonates with those invested in the Culture War.
She could also make a lot of money as a guest commenter for FOX.
Of course, the other side of this mountain is the 'so called' Iceberg Scandal that is brewing. This is an almost identical ethics faux pas as Senator Ted Stevens' - in which he was alleged to have steered contracts to a builder in exchange for the builder providing free construction to his home.
I would hate to see that this would be the reason she is resigning - because she's preparing for that embarrassment.
There is just too much of this 'pay to play' thing going on in Government.

One thing I didn't address was the need to provide for future support for her youngest child. I suspect, knowing how conservative she is, that Palin would not expect the "government" to support her Down's child completely. This means doing the best you can to provide some kind of trust fund for that child. $500,000 or $1 mil would be a good start on that. That may very well be the "family" reason for resigning. Better than paying lawyers the money!

For once, I agree with George Will. I think Palin has a difficult time dealing with criticism, whether it is deserved or not. She tends to react to every negative comment about her or her family. In fact, her family has a lot to be critical about; so has she. She already took off for months from her job when she campaigned for VP--and she kept the reins of power of governor even though she was not in Alaska and not actually governing. Whoever the new governor of Alaska may be, I think he'll do a better job than Sarah Palin. Maybe he'll actually stay home and govern Alaska--which is what Alaskan voters deserved from Palin.

Whatever Sarah is up to, it is quite clear that she is a force to be dealt with. She gives a fifteen minute backyard impromptu press conference in Alaska and knocks Michael Jackson, Sanford, Health Care and the recession out of the news. The left is in a sweat wondering what her next move is and looking to launch a preemptive strike on any front. The right can't figure it out either and wonder who among them are potential winners and losers, depending on what Sarah does.
Reply
Consider this: She is attacked as the Wasila Hillbilly, gov of a a small population state, (Hillbilly Clinton from Hope, Arkansas), her kids have funny names (Barack's kids are named Sasha and Malika), She quit the governorship (Obama and Biden quit the Senate),her kid got pregnant (Edwards impregnated his staffer), She is not really representative of small town values and America, ( Ivy Leaguers are?) She is hypocritical (see above.) -

Broken promises
Reply
She promised to serve as Governor of Alaska, that suffered while she was off playing VP prospect... Pretty much abandoning her state for the most part during the campaign just a year after being elected...
Now 2 1/2 years into her term with another year and a half left and shes quitting. I might given her some credibility had she said "I'm not running for a second term, but darn it all if I dont do my best for the time I have left"... Instead she decided she is tired of playing Governor and is simply walking out on the people of Alaska, the very people that elected her because they believed in her. It is them she is letting down.
A year on the campaign trail and a year and a half left on her term as she leaves means she basically only served 18 months as the governor of Alaska, thats not even half of her elected term.
If she cant stand the rigors of governing one state, how can we expect her to govern 50 states and various territorys?
If she cant keep a promise to the people of the state that elected her to office, how can we expect her to keep her promise to the rest of the country? So a year or two into office as president and gosh darn it things aren't going well she is just going to up and quit and walk out of that too?
The fact she pulled this on a state level has stymied her politcal career. Anytime she runs for any position in the future this will be brought up showing she is unfit to lead the nation when the going gets tough.
I'm amazed so many people are still willing to stand blindly behind her while she is walking away without a care about her word to those very same people. And that makes me even more sad...
