Health care. This isn't about "health care," and it's irritating as heck that the issue is being couched under that heading. This is about insurance. Insurance that will pay for health care.

OK, so why should people be forced to have insurance? I say they shouldn't. But then, they have to agree not to go to emergency rooms, and they have to agree not to have children. Why? Because it harms others economically when they have to pay for others medical care through higher premiums and higher medical costs, that's why. And those exorbitant costs (and rising) are pushing the middle class out of the ability to afford insurance for their families.
Of course this doesn't touch on the competition that will arise for medical services by allowing for profit insurers to continue. They'll pay higher fees, push out the 'alternative' of government run insurance, and we'll be no better off than we are now. Another subject, I suppose, for another time.-

What doesn't make sense in this is it mitigates the chance of self-insurance. Insurance is supposed to be a pooling of resources so that you are protected in case of unexpected risk. Insurance companies make their money because they charge premiums higher than the payout to the average person.

Against theft, flooding, fire damage, pet accidents, some choose to self-insure, by putting aside a certain amount of money every month that they would otherwise put towards insurance. Thus, if they ever are in need, they have savings they can use, and if they never have the need, then they have all that money that can be put to another purpose (or left to future generations).
If everyone is required to have health insurance, then why bother having people pay their own premiums? Why not just raise taxes the appropriate amount and provide single-payer? This pools the risk and prevents the people from being fleeced by insurance companies that need to make a profit.
Single-payer: Everyone pays the average amount required to pay for medical care.
Insurance: Everyone pays the average amount required PLUS overhead to the insurance companies so they can make their profit. THEN the insurance companies try to deny claims so they can make even more profit.
