Posted By Radiofreeeuropa 4 months ago in Political OpinionSarah Palin and American politics. Forbes magazine looks at the end of the culture wars. The potential of a Grand New Party. What does seem increasingly clear is that Palin's collapse represents the end of a certain kind of politics. If the culture war really is ending, culture warriors like Palin will fade from the scene.

Though Malcom was likely hard to nail politically, Steve Forbes is a republican. This is no smear job, these folks are conservatives. But they are not nit wits. There is some very interesting observations made. By continuing to court the mental deficients who buy into the "culture war", the GOP has painted itself into a corner of irrelevancy.

The well worn predictable acolytes of the Bush admn, who inhabit the threads here claim the "I quit" speech made perfect sense to them scare me. But I guess speaking in tongues is something they are used to.

In her own words-
"It may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down, plod along, and appease those who demand: 'Sit down and shut up,' but that's the worthless, easy path; that's a quitter's way out. And a problem in our country today is apathy. It would be apathetic to just hunker down and "go with the flow'”.
Since when is serving out a political term
the "quitter's way out?"
Why are none of Palin's fans noting that QUITTING is the quitter's way out?
What's that saying? Winners never quit and quitters never win?
Or quiters never quit and winners never win?
More nonsensical speaking in tongues if you ask me.
But in the end all that matters is she quit. Some spinhead tried to claim she merely was not running for another term on your thread Chuck...no wonder there is so much obtuseness...denial at it's loathsome zenith! -

Radiofreeeuropa thanks for an excellent post. The problem with comedy is that these Palinites think it is the best of the best for governance.

Just think, our country could right this minute be saddled with her and yes the Republicans would run to her defense just because she was a Republican. With her NOT in office they have wiggle room.-

Well we have heard some downright bizarre twists to arrive at her defense right here on this site. Here are a couple doozies-{Not finishing the job she was hired to do isn't quitting because she wasn't going to run again. It's fine to quit if your a lame duck rather than deal with that. It is the Media's fault. It is Letterman's fault. She didn't really quit. Alaska is a broken down old state full of moose that is a waste for her to govern.} Yes these are but a few of the tornadoes spun by her "fans" here on this site. Simply remarkable..

Some I agree about, but I can name no other politico who resigned their elected position without a scandal or critical health issue being the reason. Demeaning the state she was in charge of kind of destroys the little credible positive things one might say about her. This is an apologist's view...one that does not bear scrutiny. Did Reagan quit being governor to be in national politics? Why would anyone have to? How can you defend such nonsense?

Of course she quit.. when your job sucks.. you find a new one. That's all politics is anyways. In this case, instead of staying in a dead end job surrounded by political witch hunters, she decided to get out into the mainstream and do things on her own terms.

You really think Alaska is going to suffer because she resigned? And you really believe that what she wishes to accomplish can be a reality in a state nobody paid attention to unless it was about Palin or drilling for oil?
Of course she quit. But its no different than someone running for office for the sole purpose of getting into the presidency. Aka Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama.
What don't people understand about playing your cards right in politics?
She couldn't take the heat? More like she was sick of sitting in Alaska while she was attacked personally and politically. It's really funny when people act as if every single politician has to deal with this sort of stuff.
We have politician's who are former felons, KKK members, and have been in numerous scandals over the years. Yet they sit comfortably in power acting as if they are in some way entitled to their position.
Whether Palin fails or succeeds in the following weeks or years is up to her. She has a lot of work to do before she can be taken 100% serious. At least now she can defend on her own terms instead of sitting as a lame duck governor out in the middle of moose country.-

But when did Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama quit to run for a "better job"?

Every national candidate DOES put themselves under the media microscope.
The ones that can't bear scrutiny should never consider placing themselves in that position.

Wouldn't it be remarkable if the press wasn't more interested in determining what the people thought and less intent on telling us what to think? Characterizing Palin's resignation as her collapse speaks to the writer's perspective, not to any known outcome. The assumption that she only appeals to the socially conservative is equally unsupported. I am anything but socially conservative but I like Sarah. I have never heard her suggest that her beliefs should be legislated or in any way imposed on others.
I attribute a major source of her popularity to the perception that she is an outsider that will not play the games that other politicians do. Resigning her position instead of abusing it as a pulpit for her political aspirations will fit right into that perception.
No one knows how this will play out, but Palin is not likely to be hurt by a continuation of the constant criticism from the same media that is so accepting of the pack of clowns now in Washington."
I agree. -

Lots of stuff hidden in the woodshed - I mean that 350,000 sq ft castle she and her hubby put together with their bare hands...
I don't think that it will be long before she's crisp toast.
This wouldn't be a bad place to start looking:

As this article has pointed out, younger conservatives aren't necessarily as driven by the social issues....BUT.... Sarah Palin is a rock star among those who do champion social conservatism...and more specifically, those who bolster a rigid pro-life, anti-gay ideology. They will do their best to prop her up as truly the last culture warrior. I seriously doubt that she'll be credible as a presidential candidate because her record of walking out on her term as governor would give pause to even the base to whom she appeals. But she will make money by selling books and giving speeches. And I wouldn't be surprised if she got a gig on FOX Noise....

This last gasp of the culture wars - if that is indeed what this is - is liable to last a while. Sarah will be there milking it all the way....
Trust me, she ain't goin' away...-

Scott. Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. And to look at comebacks, remember this example?:

Pryor running for Governor, He and Wilbur D are found to have taken bribes. The two men who passed on the bribe were convicted of bribing a Public Official and sent to the pokey.
Pryor tells the electorate he didn't realize that he was being bribed. He gets elected by over 70% of the votes. Never faces an inquiry.
Where politics is involved we must always be wary.
