Here are the facts- a history of the self destruction of the GOP.
Nixon southern strategy- In the 50s and 60s the Democratic party adapted a civil rights position which didn't sit well with racists. The Republican stated strategy was to court them away from the Democrats by opposing civil rights. They claimed segregation was a state's "right" and the Federal government had no authority to challenge them.

They succeeded, so now the republican party began to take in the primarily working class southerners whom they previously would have had nothing to do with unless they needed their cesspool pumped at their summer homes.

At the same time the theocratic right seeks to establish control over society in the name of their particular religion. The late D. James Kennedy, former pastor of Coral Ridge Ministries, called on his followers to exercise "godly dominion ... over every aspect ... of human society." At a "Reclaiming America for Christ" conference in February, 2005, Kennedy said:

"Our job is to reclaim America for Christ, whatever the cost. As the vice regents of God, we are to exercise godly dominion and influence over our neighborhoods, our schools, our government, our literature and arts, our sports arenas, our entertainment media, our news media, our scientific endeavors -- in short, over every aspect and institution of human society." Hence the term "dominionists".

Twenty-five years ago, dominionists targeted the Republican Party as the vehicle through which they could advance their agenda. At the same time, a small group of Republican strategists targeted fundamentalist, Pentecostal and charismatic churches to expand the base of the Republican Party.

Today's hard right seeks total dominion. It has been packing the courts and rigging the rules. The target is not the Democratic party but democracy itself.

People of faith have always tried to bring their interpretation of the Bible to bear on American laws and morals ... it's the American way, protected by the First Amendment. But what is unique today is that the radical religious right has succeeded in taking over one of America's 2 major political parties. The country is not yet a theocracy but the Republican Party is, using "God" as a battering ram on almost every issue: crime and punishment, foreign policy, health care, taxation, energy, regulation, social services and so on.

The rise of the neocon faction-
Much has been discussed about these ideologues since the Bush Admn. was packed with them.
Irving Kristol, is considered a founder of the neoconservative movement. along with Norman Podhoretz, editor of Commentary magazine from 1960 to 1995. (By 1982 Podhoretz was calling himself a neoconservative).
Kristol's son, William Kristol, founded the infamous Project for the New American Century. Jonathan Clarke, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, proposed the following as the "main characteristics of neoconservatism" (from "Viewpoint: The end of the neocons?", Jonathan Clarke, British Broadcasting Corporation, January 13, 2009)
        * "a tendency to see the world in binary good/evil terms
        * low tolerance for diplomacy
        * readiness to use military force
        * emphasis on US unilateral action
        * disdain for multilateral organizations
        * focus on the Middle East.
I have a much lower opinion myself. I'd say they were imperialists and corporatist opportunists whose naive notions of the world outside their own borders toy with insanity.

        Self described neocons include:
        Donald Rumsfeld
        Paul Wolfowitz
        Douglas Feith
        Richard Perle
        James Woolsey
        Stephen Cambone
        Abram Shulsky
        Dick Cheney
        Lewis Libby
        David Wurmser
        Elliott Abrams
        John Hannah
        Eric Edelman
        John Bolton
        Richard Armitage
        Stephen Bryen (U.S.-China Security Commission)
Rupert Murdoch of Fox News, Weekly Standard etc.
Leo Strauss, the neocon "philosopher," taught that the elite (the neocons themselves) need to deceive the masses who cannot handle or benefit from the "truth." Consequently neocons feel justified in hiding the real reasons for the war behind the WMD excuse or giving secret documents or technology to Israel, since they know better what is good for America.

Today's GOP is an occupied party. Traditional conservatives have no influence, they are drowned out if not literally drummed out of the party effectively. With the spectacular failure of the Bush admn, the neocons are less dominant than the dominionists and those easily connived into following their agenda for theocracy in the U.S.

Holy Moly, RFE! I channel surfed on Sunday morning because cartoons had
replaced a regular "news" show - and Coral Ridge Ministries is what I ran
into! The whole "sermon" - complete with analysts interspersed within
Dr. Kennedy's "preaching" from the Heritage Foundation and Patrick Henry U -
was about trashing the ACLU and Judge Sotomayor! They get a tax pass as a non-profit?
The big push was to send money so that they could pay for a "very
expensive" ad in the NY Times to........ once again....... TRASH Sotomayor!
Oh - and the preview for next Sunday? They will be trashing the United Nations!

WHY are our hard earned tax dollars subsidizing a POLITICAL entity?
I heard no Gospels - no soothing words to the congregation - no encouragement
to be a better person - not even any Bible thumping................I heard
the POLITICAL neocon agenda, plain and simple. And I am furious that
they are allowed special priviledges when it comes to sharing in this
          great Democracy. It is WRONG!

Actually Democrats were the original segregationists who opposed de-segregation and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This included Senator William A Fulbright and Senator Al Gore Sr (who vehemently opposed equal rights for blacks). Former President Lyndon B Johnson was able to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act mostly because of the support of white northern Republicans.
