But third-party developers can still feel free to use it as long as it's used in a reputable manner. What's less okay is using the word "Twitter" and copying the design.

Tweet- herbrew / time's hold of wisdom of two "emotionally intelligent" to the correct. How we patent or copy-right a word...is beyond me...as words are just a solo mnization of the tone. (alter, change, modify - cause to change; make different; cause a transformation/

This is how we sing songs and sing prayers to our God...who knows the hidden ones.

I'm not a legal expert, but copyrights essentially say you invented the word where as trademarks are more about uses and processes. So, I am betting the trademark is something like :
"Use of the word 'tweet' as a verb to express the action of electronically submitting a short bit of text to a service that may reveal this text publicly or privately to people watching your feed of messages."

You can't sue children every time they since a song about birds tweeting ;)

For the most part these sorts of trademarks are to protect the image of the service, so that some Porn Director can't make a movie "****ter" and then make lude depictions of "tweeting" in there. With a trademark in place, the movie company can be sued. And as they mention in the article, to nix confusion among similar products.

          Interesting times we live in.

It is reasonable, no surprise. This is just to avoid overusing the word “tweet” and to prevent those bad guys using it for their own ill motive.

It would have been ok if they trademark "twitter" but going for "tweet" is too much.

Looks like they were too late - the "tweet" trademark had already flown the coop:
