Decriminalization of drugs leads to a decrease in usage. Could some of that be in part that doing drugs no longer holds the glamour that has been associated with it in most Western societies?

The glamor, or forbidden fruit effect was also noted in the Netherlands, although I understand that they've tightened up their criminalization laws anyway. Overall drug use did not escalate there either.

Pharmaceutical drug usage continues to climb, through legal prescription or otherwise. How many households have no prescription drugs in them? How'd we get so sick that we need all these medications?

Michael Jackson's drugs weren't decriminalized where he lived, were they?

Your comment is a telling statement about how well U.S. drug policy works.

Regardless of whether one believes Portugal's policy on drugs works, it obviously works as well as the one in the U.S.--and I'd bet it does so at a tiny fraction of the cost.

Jovial, this is you at your best. IMHO.

Something that I have always pondered. Looking at the corruption of South America and Mexico, one must strongly look at this option as their battles bleeds over the borders. My pause and one that holds more weight, is how heroin and cocaine swallow up lives. Maybe I'm just getting older, but watching our youth, which seems to have no direction it would be putting a match to a dry forest.

I didn't write this story. To some it may seem like I write these stories, because i usually can back up the stories I submit rather eloquently, In this case, I just wanted to explore other options to the existing policies and how drug use is handled in this country. If I even made you think for a second, i achieved my goal. We have spent billions of dollars fighting the war on drugs. Yet illegal drugs are readily available troughout America. Maybe we ought to think about a better solution.
