Comments for CIA Admits It Misled Congress in Past, Lawmakers Say »
Posted By ybdogsct 4 months, 3 weeks ago in NewsSix Democrats on the U.S. House Intelligence Committee said the head of the CIA admitted the agency misled Congress since 2001 about “significant actions.”
In a letter to CIA Director Leon Panetta, the six members said he had “recently” testified that “top CIA officials have concealed significant actions from all members of Congress” and “misled members” from 2001 until this week.
In May, Pelosi charged that when she was a member of the House intelligence panel, the spy agency gave her misleading and inaccurate information whether it had waterboarded suspected terrorists. The CIA has acknowledged that it used the interrogation technique on three detainees suspected of being al-Qaeda operatives to simulate the sensation of drowning.
House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio has challenged Pelosi to either produce evidence to support her claim or retract her assertion that the CIA “misrepresented every step of the way” its use of harsh interrogation techniques on suspected terrorists.
The lawmakers’ letter said Panetta’s recent testimony disclosed concealment by the CIA that is “similar to other deceptions of which we are aware from other recent periods.”

"I think it's a tragedy that we are seeing this massive attack on our intelligence community," Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri said.

"This is an untenable situation," says Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa). "It puts our entire national security at risk. Since she cannot be legitimately briefed, because she has directly challenged the integrity of the CIA, ...I'm asking that her security clearance be suspended or removed until such time as the situation is resolved."
Senior Republican aides said the GOP would introduce a resolution calling for the probe to investigate House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's claims that the CIA misled her in 2002 about whether waterboarding had been used against a terrorist suspect.
Many Propeller Republicans joined in the condemnation of Pelosi. Let's see how many apologies are issued by those who pounced on Pelosi prematurely.

Impressive ybdog, BUT we shouldn't forget that the CIA has been lying to Congress repeatedly for DECADES and especially since the Reagan administration.
Reply
Here is a great article about one of our own war criminals, which includes information on the involvement of he and others (especially Cheney and Gates) in corrupting the CIA during the Reagan administration (amongst other crimes), as well as their roles in preventing Congress from cleaning up the CIA after the Church investigation. It is written by a former member of the National Security Council who saw it all from the inside.
Given Gates presence in the current administration, I doubt much has really changed.

Baby steps, HYPERBOLA. At least Panetta had the courage to admit it (and not wait until decades after-the-fact to do so). That gives me some hope. -

hyperbola, the CIA has been lying ever since I started paying attention to politics. Remember that the Nixon gang that broke into the Watergate building were ex-CIA agents. The CIA has been accused of being involved in both Kennedy assassinations as well as the MLK assassination. True or not, where there's smoke there's fire.

One thing that stands out to me is the fact that G H W Bush was the head of the CIA under President Ford and has been accused of being involved with the supposed agreement with the Iranians after the Embassy was taken over in 1979. After he became VP, we had the Iran-Contra scandal that had Bush and the CIA's MO all over it. So it's been going on a long time.

Its one of those old, 'my team' is better and more honorable than 'your team' until the truth comes out and they are left backpeddling and looking for another angle. Be sure that Panetta will be the new goat in this sad saga of American atrocities.

I just love it. Paneta, a Democrat operative, says that the CIA held back information and misled members of congress. We are supposed to believe him. He is protecting his own. His getting that appointment was a very shady deal to begin with. He is protecting his buddies.

I am not a Republican, but my apologies are due. For a while, I had expressed the opinion that Pelosi "appeared" to be contradicting her previous testimony. To be fair, I admittedly confessed that I had still held Pelosi responsible for bowing to President Bush following his second presidential appointment. Her promises to the Democrats prior to Bush's second term were quickly forgotten and her desire to cooperate with Bush annoyed many Americans; I for one.
Reply
Of course, I am not surprised at the reactionaries on Propeller and their harsh judgments of Pelosi and I do believe that most of these wing-nuts would be unwilling to show any respect for Pelosi's integrity or any contempt for the CIA's poor conduct.
So, other than a few centrist conservatives for who I respect, I would not expect to hear any apologies for their contemptuous comments and hateful commentaries thus far made against Pelosi.
Most likely, there will be more of the same forthcoming - simply because she is a liberal and any liberal according to these bigots deserve nothing but their contempt. -

This article only partially absolves Pelosi. In admitting that the CIA has misled congress, Panetta is vindicating Pelosi's charge that the CIA has been lying to congress, but we still can't be certain about her claims of ignorance as these pertain to water boarding. However, this is hardly a surprise.
Reply
The CIA has a very checkered past and is hardly above scrutiny and criticism. The Republicans were quick to jump on the bandwagon and blame the CIA for bad intelligence about Iraq when the WMD's failed to show up and then suddenly become great defenders of their integrity when Nancy Pelosi levels criticism at them. Again this is just more hyperbole and grandstanding by the drama queens of the right. Republicans invoke principle when it suits their purposes then spin like Maytag washers when caught in their own lies or malfeasance. The party of personal responsibility is largely a crock. -

But the article's evidence does suggest that there is proof that she was NOT lying to the Senate or the public about being deliberately misled by the malevolent leadership at the CIA.

Is the CIA above the law?
Will the idiots who speciously claim that Bush kept us safe from terrorists through some mysterious invisible strategy now claim that lying is part of what kept us safe?
Is the American public stupid enough to buy that completely irrational argument?
More importantly, will the current administration reverse the lawlessness attitudes of the previous one as it appears to be doing?
Lots of questions to be asked of these egregious realities, with too few answers. -

These Democrats wrote this letter in a very weak attempt to clear Pelosi of her lying.
Reply
You see, the briefing they are referring to had nothing to do with the stuff Pelosi lied about. The briefing was about a program that was never put in motion that the CIA never told Congress about. That's right. There were plans for a program that was shelved before Congress was told about and this is supposedly proof that the CIA has witheld information from Congress and we're supposed to now think that they didn't brief Pelosi about the waterboarding.
The Democrats are throwing the CIA under the bus in a desperate attempt to give Pelosi cover for her lies. -

There is the old philosophic question rising, if it is a lie not to say everything you know. In the case of the CIA, I would state: Yes. As an cooperative partner of the government, the intelligence has the duty of information. Waterboarding as a "special" means of questioning was usual practice before being accepted and put in a distance from torture by the Bush administration. Would G. W. Bush have been able to admit that his intelligence tortures and acts fully out of his control?

Thanks YbDog. Great Post and on target follow up comments. Now that there is truth coming out that the CIA lied about something (surprise, surprise ), when will we ever hear about some other lies that cost lives and futures?
Reply
Specifically I'm asking about lies about WMD, Iraqi Al-Queda, Imminent Threat, and about torture - lets not forget about the lies of omission - not admitting that hundreds of innocent people have been tortured to death.
Will we ever hear truth spoken about these atrocities? -
