I enjoy attempts to find out the nature of the Universe.Even when some attempts may prove to be expensive and/or inaccurate. They encourage people to ask,the most important question they will ever ask, namely,"what is the nature of my life".Everyone asks this question in one form or the other. It may be worded,"Why does anything exist",or "Is there more to this than working, procreating, finding a partner, having kids,or not, then dieing",or "is there a God,or is it all chance"etc. All education leads us to this question, as does the sciences, the arts, religions, philosophies,or just chattering over a beer or coffee. This question has been asked since the dawn of humanity, doubtless it will continue until it is sated,or humanity has ceased to be.

For me the Hubble was wonderful,as Herschel is starting to be.There is no doubt they are very expensive endeavors! However there is the money to fulfill all mans needs and still have such things. It is just a question of the fair redistribution of resources.Hubble was paid for by the American tax payer and the Herschel by the European tax payer. One could argue space telescopes are a better investment, than wars,or many other expensive an inhuman investments, common in the World today. As for them being failures,it's a point of view.As for scientists changing their minds,it's natural for all open minded people to change their minds.Plus we all take advantage of scientific breakthroughs, for instance, are we not exchanging views on the internet, via computers, that would have seemed impossible just over 50 years ago! -
