Enemy of Health Care Reform: The Manhattan Institute »
Posted By jovial 4 months, 2 weeks ago in Political OpinionThe Manhattan Institute is a bastion of right-wing causes that is pulling out all the stops to derail health care reform. For progressives in the U.S., even the simplest, most incremental reform seems like a climb up Mount Everest. And as the fight for health care reaches a critical stage, many of us watch in dismay as "centrist" politicians try to take what already was a centrist plan from the Obama Administration - nowhere close to "single payer," never mind "socialized medicine" - and pull it to the Right, making it far less responsive to America's real needs.

I've mentioned the manhattan institute before. It's the outfit that the Canadian psychiatrist that talks about Canadian healthcare being flawed to discourage Americans from adopting anything similar. So in my sister story we talk about lobbying and what the insurance industries are doing to thwart legislation. Now let's look at the political side. How these think tanks are using "conservative" blogs, media, and creating talking points to make Americans vote against their own best interests.

he can't 'sell' his dream. so he blames the other side for his inability to close the deal.
the only thing that i can say in the author's defense is that he has to face entrenched lobby interests.

"What's striking about how conservative think tanks "think" is that they think backward. That is, instead of beginning with a problem and working out a solution, they begin with the solution (e.g., cut taxes, deregulate, privatize, cut taxes, eliminate government programs, and cut taxes) and work backward, cherry picking data all along the way, to reach the problem. And if the problem doesn't sit the solution, then the problem is "re-framed" so that it does.
In short, the function of the right-wing "think tank" infrastructure is not to craft policy, but to package and sell the Right's point of view. And they are very good at that." -

It's not broke so the "progressives" have to fix it. Where are they going to get all the extra doctors that will be needed? There aren't enough to go around now. Before they "reform" health care, they'd better think it through first.

it is very "broke", chip56. and part of the reforms will have to be to transfer some of the more routine health issues to be handled by nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants.
Reply
we will also need to subsidize health care education, for technicians, nursing staff and doctors.
as a society, we've been "thinking through" the problem for decades. NOW its time to DO something about it.

A business that pays "experts" for predetermined outcomes is not much different than prostitution.
Reply
The insurance industry should become an advocate for legalizing prostitution. With their experience and their imminent need to replace the loss of business that will come from a not-for-profit government health care option, they could provide a service that would reduce health care claims from sexually transmitted diseases and earn substantial profits at the same time.

Put these guys together with the televangelists - who
Reply
have special tax status, no less! - and their Sunday
sermons that consist of bashing the U.N. - Sotomayor -
and the proposed healthcare reform - and I don't think
we have a chance. We're overrun with entities that maintain
a special status because.......because......?
Philanthropy? Good deeds? Encouraging people's souls?
They are divisive - totally political and WE are paying
for the priviledge!
Show us your aid to the poor - your programs to feed the
needy - your care for the aged programs.......but DON'T
ask for donations to buy a NY Times ad to battle the
appointmee to the Supreme Court - or fight healthcare
reform. Nothing short of putting a gold cross on the cover
of the lobbying bible! If that is all they are.......take
away their special status and they can be just like the
rest of us with an opinion. Do it on your own time -
AND on your own DIME!
