Jeboba, I didn't watch the video but, several states are looking into taxing people by the mile. Oregon being one, Massachusetts and several others are looking into the mechanisms on how to do it. One is a sticker that would have a GPS tracking device so if that is the premise of the video they are not far off.

Conceptually, I see no problem with a tax for use. The tracking part would be the only issue for me.

Maybe a method of tracking where total miles traveled in the US are recorded and nothing else would be less risky.
Ironically, it makes me wonder if the government purposefully *encouraged* auto manufacturers to keep gas mileage stagnant for the last 20 years. -

Can you say PARANOID? Sure, I knew you could. The gas tax works just fine but probably needs to rise. This would help encourage alternative fuels. This is likely being pushed by big oil. The 911 footage in the beginning of the video tells me this is designed to instill fear. I haven't heard of this from a reliable source yet.

Taxing by the mile to supplement the gasoline tax because more fuel efficient cars are on the road is understandable while still being objectionable.

Using GPS to accomplish this is suspicious. A mileage tax was considered in New Jersey a few years ago and the only device necessary was recording a simple odometer reading when going through the yearly auto inspection.
There is no economic reason to require GPS devices when it can be done without cost. A record of where every person is every moment is onerous. Big Brother Computer is watching.
Americans have had and should insist on their privacy rights. (See the 9th Amendment to the Constitution.)-

With 200 million cars in this country how are you going to track all of them all the time? It does sound like a logistical nightmare. Odometer readings are simple, cheaper, and less intrusive. Smaller, lighter cars use less gasoline but are easier on the roadways. I understand that revenues are decreasing because of hybrids and alternative fuels but, for now, this should be a perk of actively working toward our new non fossil fuel economy.
