One would think that this is a great thing, seeing that these extremists have found some true enemies of their people and religion.

But, "Al Queda" is just a fantasy group. Started and funded by the US to fight the USSR in Afghanistan, then used by their creators to justify a global expansion of military bases, especially in the central asian area.
Now, they go back to fighting communists, all at a time when the US is beginning to have some real problems with China.
It's all so convenient. -

This is something the people in the United States must watch and witness...as it is what I have stressed...revenge is the result of punishment and punishment causes resentment. When the Judicial system made punishment...it set it's course to end in disaster.

Anyway, what ever the article said, I think that China's conflict with the Uighurs will weaken their international status more than they realize. This is another of the oppressed minorities that now has openly fought with the Beijing government. This will only expose further China's oppression and heavy-handedness to the world.
I expect that the Uighurs will receive help clandestinely from Muslims around the world. This will slow down China's drive to increase trade and ally themselves with numerous 3rd world nations as they reassess China's motives and methods.
This will probably help the US because China has been calling for a different monetary standard than the dollar. These 3rd world nations will see that the US is a more reliable and benign ally than China. -
