If anyone still believes Republicans are doing anything other than delaying progress of the bill by submitting and then pulling their own amendments from consideration, check out some of the amendments in question:
Reply
-- Coburn 51: To prohibit the use of funds to build football stadiums.
-- Coburn 111: To prohibit the Department of Health and Human Services from providing funding for fashion shows.
-- Enzi 59: To prohibit the Secretary from requiring the use of best practices.
-- Enzi 87: To strike provisions relating to oral health.
-- Coburn 43: To rename the community health program subtitle IV - would rename it the “Federal Takeover of Local Communities.”
-- Coburn 102: To limit the amount the Department of Health and Human Services may spend on conferences each year
-- Coburn 29: To ensure that abortion providers are not co-locating at schools in order to be integrated into school-based health clinics and gain access to potential clients.

So, Republicans block their OWN amendments just because it is a Democrat bill and they don't want to support ANYTHING that the Democrats propose, regardless of its merits or the supporting facts?
Reply
And the "conservatives" on Propeller droll on and on about how it is the Democrats that are partisan and "playing politics"?
So much hypocrisy from the 'right' that is really has become sickening ... -

Settle down.

This is the committee. Dodd is saying we're willing to accept the amendments so they can be voted on by the full Senate. In other words: Yeah, we'll let them in and knock them all down later.
The Republicans want a debate. The Democrats are going to ram through their version of the bill regardless.
So yeah, Republicans are saying if there's not going to be a real debate on this, this is your puppy and we'll have no part of this phony display of bipartisanship.
Sheesh... you'd think you guys would be tuned in to the political game being played here.-

You are the one that is not "tuned in", except to the usual garbage that is dispensed as 'fact' by the right-wing "pundits".

If the Republicans on the committee voted to BLOCK their own amendments, it has NOTHING to do with what Dodd said. And, if the amendments ARE in the bill for the full Senate, then there will be debate and ALL Senators can vote for or against those amendments.
Do you actually understand how Congress works???? -

The Republicans want a debate, but they're asking for a debate on their own amendments.
Reply
They're not asking for a debate on the bill--that'll happen regardless.
It's clear they're simply delaying the bill's movement onto the floor of the House where the bill can be debated and voted on.

Yes, those nasty obstructionist republicans who want everyone to be aware, read and discuss the amendments to the bill.
Reply
Dodd's initial statement was that he wanted to add the amendments and then they'd be ready to read them. Shouldn't they be read (and discussed BEFORE the bill is amended?)-

Not really because it was just for the cameras..... Remember AIG and the changes in the middle of the night just hours before the vote.
Reply
Same thing with the last three bills that have come out on major issues. You can just add it and we will remove it in the middle of the night just hours before we vote and you will not have time to read.....
If they were serious about taking their time to get it right your statement would have made more sense and held merit. Since that is not what is going on in Washington right now nobody cares except the American people right now.
