This morning, amazed Amazon Kindle owners realized that someone had seemingly managed to "steal" some of their e-books from their Kindle. In reality, the books had been remotely deleted by Amazon.com. Not because the books were illegal copies (which has happened in the past), but because the publisher decided it no longer wanted to sell e-book versions of George Orwell's "1984" and "Animal Farm."

    amazon is the future, unfortunately. why burn a book when it can just disappear?

      Yes berkeley - I was reminded of Oscar Werner as Gunther(?)
      and the futuristic firemen from Fahrenheit 451.
      So according to the article Amazon executed the wishes
      of the publisher..........but WHY would any publisher DO that?

      Will they be removed from college campuses and libraries next?
      What's going on?

        "1984" is in the public domain in many countries. Maybe the real question is why US law allows a 60 year old book to remain under copyright.
