Posted By tehranchik 4 months, 2 weeks ago in Political OpinionIn the hours and hours of preening, ponderous, self-serving media tributes to Walter Cronkite, here is a clip you won't see, in which Cronkite -- when asked what is his biggest regret --
" What do I regret? Well, I regret that in our attempt to establish some standards, we didn't make them stick. We couldn't find a way to pass them on to another generation."
It's impossible even to imagine the likes of Brian Williams, Tom Brokow and friends interrupting their pompously baritone, melodramatic, self-glorifying exploitation of Cronkite's death to spend a second pondering what he meant by that.

david halberstam was the exception in journalism, but in the transition from radio into television, honesty became a very rare element. edward r murrow may have the title as the one who came closer than others.
cronkite was probably better than most of his peers and was way better than today's crop. but he was still an insider and still lied for the government. that he lied less often is to his credit.
i.f. stone's weekly caught as many official lies as anyone could have managed, and cronkite made the list. -
