it is also horrendously in debt. ironically, it is a microcosm of all that ails the entire globe - greed, avarice, arrogance, wastefulness, exploitation, inhumanity and a complete environmental disaster, as well as anything else you care to add to the list.

Mostly, I hear, it's built on the prostitution of Russian and eastern-european women. I had a friend who went to stay in Dubai, stayed in a beautiful hotel and asked if he could stay on one of the upper floors. The desk clerk told him no. Later he found out from a friend he was dining with that the reason is because the top few floors of most expensive hotels are filled with Russian and Eastern-European prostitutes ( 'high-class' - whatever that means in prostitution circles).

i don't think "built on" is the correct metaphor for russian prostitutes or others from the former soviet "stan" states. "draining" maybe? the same deal can be found with other former soviet sex workers, from europe to japan. the actual "building" of dubai is done by 21st century slave labor from mostly bangladesh, sri lanka, somalia and the philippines. but then the same can also be said for other affluent parts of the middle-east, the sub-continent and se asia

I think it is built on the sweat of the poor, for the indulgence of the wealthy.I think "Dissent" got it bang on with--"it is a microcosm of all that ails the entire globe - greed, avarice, arrogance, wastefulness, exploitation, inhumanity and a complete environmental disaster, as well as anything else you care to add to the list".

Dubai is like W. Got born on third base and thinks they hit a triple. Nothing but a crapload of oil and a small population to share it with. As soon as the oil goes so does Dubai. They govern Palin style. Complete incompetence but if you can sell oil you can buy friends.

I have friends who live in Dubai and I have been twice. It strikes me as a place you can live a great life if you don't mind turning a blind eye whilst you chase the dollar or sup cocktails. The irony of the place is that you can go to prison for owing money to someone- but (according to the Financial Times) this small state is in debt to the tune of $80bn. You can really sense the Emerati think they are above all other races- and it sickened me. One Emerati woman came close to running over my friends son whilst she sped through a car park and i shouted at her- only for my friend to tell me i could go to prison for doing so. (And no- I don't think the UK is perfect either).
