We should be looking to those couples married for 25 years plus for the answers. You will find many of them were not happy and living in bliss all the years of their marriage. But they did believe in commitment to their spouse and families. People change and grow in different directions a marriage requires work to stay focused on each other, not one's personal desires and wants. The problem is people don't want to be committed to anyone or anything that doesn't meet their needs. The people who suffer the most are children. When parents divorce the families resources are reduced and what is left ends up being shared with new spouses and step siblings. The child must now compete for needed reources with other people who aren't even biological family. Unfortunately, their new married mom and dads are once again in wedded bliss with their new partners. How long will this last until it dies off and they are once again off to find a new partner. Children are the real victims.

You will find that communication and devotion are two key components. Something that should be taught in the schools -- communication, at the least, -- but something you'll find castigated as "liberal woo woo" stuff.
"The people who suffer the most are children. "
Absolutely true.
"When parents divorce the families resources are reduced and what is left ends up being shared with new spouses and step siblings. "
Absolutely false. You'll often find more resources and more 'love' to be given, especially in families that leave open lines of communication.
