Obama goes on the offensive. He talks about the infamous "Waterloo" statement made by Republicans. Republicans have tried to politicize this issue. The Insurance companies have profitized the system. Obama is trying to wrestle back control from the profiteers and the ideologists.

As you can see the rightwingers are out in force trying to minimize the points made in this submission. They, like the insurance companies, want to ensure this healthcare bill is dead. Their interest isn't in the good of the American people. It's in their wallets and their political influence to further their cause. They are siding with the insurance companies against the average citizen to further their "Bush Agenda".

Really?
Subsidizing health insurance while preserving intact an avaricious for-profit insurance system is simply handing vast amounts of taxpayer's money to the profiteers.
More trickle-down economics from the fake lefty president.

He has to try something. His polls are dropping about his spending and taxing. This health care vision he has will be trillions and damage the insurance industry, drive the cost out of site or ration it.

What a plan. Look at what is happening in Massachusetts. They are going bankrupt there. One Hospital is suing the state because they are not paying for the $35 million deficit they have and with the proposed Medicaid cuts that will grow to $100 million. Bankruptcy for them. And we want this for the nation????-

The insurance companies realize that if the public option passes they would have to compete to still be attractive to the public. That competition would force them to reform their practices and that would most certainly cut into their profits and then the poor executives wouldn't be able to afford that third vacation home and a rock star serenading their daughter at her sweet sixteen party.

When the insurance companies have the taxing power of the federal government, then they will be competing. Otherwise, the notion of the government competing with the insurance companies is complete and utter nonsense.

Not to worry about a few people enjoying excessive vacations. With government run healthcare, there will be countless bureaucrats vacationing at their government jobs 52 weeks a year.

One thing I don't see anyone talking about: the for-profit insurance companies (Blue-Cross/Sheild, UHC...etc) will use this as a dumping ground for anyone they don't want to insure.
Reply
They will ONLY insure healthy 20-year old athletes who don't play any 'touch' sports and give the older population the brush-off because of the risk they might have to pay to get them well if they actually get sick.
This single-payer health plan is a real money maker for the for-profit companies we are presently being screwed by.
They will verify through a DNA check you won't be a burden to their bottom line and ensure they can profit from this situation.
Shouldn't the people in government who don't actually read the bills they're pushing through be asked to ensure this doesn't happen?-

But government plans don't do this, right?
Reply
They accept EVERYONE. Then tell them what services and drugs they can or cannot have. Result: higher death rate.
btw...when a company insures its employees with BCBC or UHC, EVERYONE gets the same options UPON HIRE WITH OR WITHOUT PRE-EXISTING ILLNESS. AND THEIR LIFETIME MAX STARTS OVER WITH EACH NEW JOB.
You liberals had the chance to prove you gave a damn about health care when you wasted $400 billion on pork projects. You demonstrated your fraudulence to the entire nation. In spades. -

--First, they can more or less do this already. Further, this only bolsters the argument that for-profit insurance is, on its face, an extremely bad idea.
"They will ONLY insure healthy 20-year old athletes who don't play any 'touch' sports and give the older population the brush-off because of the risk they might have to pay to get them well if they actually get sick."
--That strikes me as fairly self-destructive. For one thing, it's unrealistic to bank on everyone who gets turned away simply walking away good-naturedly and running straight to Uncle Sam. Some people get *really* p*ssed when they're dissed. I could be wrong but I'm thinking that court costs will get a lot steeper for insurers--at a time when they're competing for members.

Insurance companies are already denying coverage anywhere they can....and yes they probably will weed out all but the healthiest people. They already DO that. Those with pre-existing conditions pay higher rates, if they are covered at all. Which begs the question: Why do we want to continue this?
Reply
And I negged you for one simple reason: the idea that bills usually aren't read in congress is preposterous. All 535 members of the House and Senate are equipped with staffs that do the research for them. Do all of them do this research properly and effectively? No. Are the numbers skewed in favor of party loyalty? For almost all of them, the answer his YES! But let's be real....these people are not stupid. Political, yes. Willfully ignorant of the facts, perhaps. Manipulative, definitely. And that goes for most Republicans and most Democrats, unfortunately....

The blue dog democrats have to pander to their redstate constituencies. They don't really want a fight with Obama and the Democrats on this issue, they have to toss the Limbaugh and Hannity listeners a bone so they can get reelected.

Meanwhile ....
The conservative "think tanks" get lots of money from rich conservatives and also from the insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
It is WELL documented that many politicians, especially Republicans, get big contributions from big insurance and pharmaceutical lobbyists.
Insurance company lobbyists are spending 1.5 Million PER DAY to lobby Congress AGAINST any health care reform.
The insurance and the pharmaceutical companies want to keep the status quo. They don't want any changes, because they are making too much money by denying benefits, surgeries, treatments, and by screwing anyone with "pre-existing" conditions.
The less money insurance companies pay for medical treatment, the more profit they make. They pay bonuses to doctors that 'save' money by NOT ordering tests and treatments and surgeries.
Health care should NEVER be run "for profit". There should never be any such corporate profit at the expense of the health and LIVES of the vast majority of the people in this country.
To read and understand the REAL facts about the proposed health care reform, go to factcheck.org and search on "Obama health care" and you will get all of the pertinent articles and researched FACTS for BOTH sides of the issue.-

And yet, we'll STILL re-elect these bozos based on their party, and STILL get hosed beyond belief by these same bozos.

We have to remember these are the same bozos who put us in this situation initially - the American public just voted.
Look what we got!!!
What exactly is our problem?
Are we that dense to be seduced by these bozos to vote for them 'because I'm liberal/conservative and that's what we do?' --- Is it time for a change to a lot of independents or do we wait for the violent revolution to begin?
I really don't think the American public will EVER wake up until it's way too late to change the mess the democlicans have
done to our America...the above entries prove it. -

when it comes to health care, the cons seem to be afraid of everything but the status quo, even though the status quo is what they should be afraid of.
Reply
there are many reasons why every other western industrialized nation has a universal or public plan.
there are many reasons why no other western industrialized nation that has a universal or public plan would trade with the US and our current plan.
and it seems like the cons on here aren't interested in any of those reasons at all (like the fact we'll save money in the long run, just ask any of those other nations).
the cons on here just want the status quo because its the status quo. and even though the status quo is killing us, they simply don't care. -

Maybe those for the plan can explain this problem? If we already have a shortage of qualified doctors and nurses in this country, how will this universal plan LOWER costs if Obama plans to add the 47 million more "uninsured" people to be covered?

newsflash: we're already paying for those 47 million uninsured americans, doctor shortage, no doctor shrtage, doesn't matter. and since those people have no alternatives in most cases but to go the emergency room for care, those costs are very high. putting those people into a health plan thats paid for through tax dollars will actually decrease your share of the burden since the cost of care for those 47 million won't be as high (ie no emergency room visits).
Reply
so, you won't be adding anyone into the system cause those people are already int he system, whether we like it or not. with a public option, we'll just be treating them differently than we currently do, and we'll save money on it.
also, the money households will save in the form of not paying out huge premiums and huge deductables will more than offset any tax increase. so, at the ground level, you'll be saving money.
last year the annual premiums for a family of four averaged $12,700. now, you could increase my taxes 5% or whatever and it will be far less than $12,700. so see? saving money.
also, over the last ten years, employment-based health insurance premiums have increased 120%, compared to cumulative inflation of 44% and cumulative wage growth of 29% during the same period. with a public option, these types of increases in costs simply won't occur and cost hikes will be more in line with actual inflation since the profit incentive will be taken away.
I could go on. but here's a great fact sheet everyone should take a look at:

It's stunning that Obama can speak about the serious problems we face with our status quo health care fiasco, and people fight him over the truth. I have to wonder if they're just stupid. You can't justify this system of ours. It kills people. It causes human suffering. It puts children at risk. And yet the clowns continue to bash Obama for trying to fix a mess they have ignored for decades. WTF is wrong with people? Is there truth in that finding that conservatives have different brains? I'm beginning to think so, because no one could act like that on purpose.

A pretty heated debate over health care is...healthy. Of course, it seems some of the debaters are just piggy-backing off of previous arguments or other bloggers instead of really addressing what Obama said in the video.
Reply
What it comes down to...at the end of the day...is...do we really want change or are we going to go down with the ship?
Health care reform is not an option anymore but a dire necessity which will make or break the back of America in the near future; especially, when combined with increased unemployment, state and local government cutting of programs, and a failed bailout plan. And, yes, the bailout has failed. Citibank, Bank of America, JP Morgan-Chase, and Goldman Sachs have all reported billion dollar profits for the last quarter and the economy is no better for it! You figure it out.
The health care issue is a critical piece of the economic puzzle that must be solved to fix other cascading issues. The Obstructionist Party is to be expected to stand in the way of change. But, now, some of the Democrats are showing that they are not progressive enough to take on the necessary challenges of our future.
Democracy could very well hang in the balance over what happens in the next 4-8 years. Obviously, some do not want democracy to survive.
