The White House today said that President Obama "regrets" the furor his remarks on the arrest of his friend Henry Louis Gates Jr. have caused, as the lawyer for the cop who arrested the black Harvard University professor said the officer may sue Gates for defamation.

Sgt. James Crowley and Obama respond to the ongoing debate.

"I think he would regret if he realized how much of a overall distraction and obsession it would be," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters.

When asked if the president would apologize to the officer, as some police unions have demanded, Gibbs would only say that the president understands that the job police officers do is hard and that he has great respect for them.

Gibbs added that he did not expect Obama to have anything else to say about the incident.

"I think he's said most of what he's going to say on it," Gibbs said.

Alan McDonald, who represents Sgt. James Crowley, said the veteran cop who teaches a racial profiling class for rookie police officers has not ruled out filing a defamation of character or libel lawsuit.

"He is exploring all of his options,'' McDonald told ABC News.

Though charges were dropped, Gates has loudly asserted his arrest was a result of racial profiling.

Obama 'Regrets' The 'Obsession' Over His Comments but not His Actual Comment!

Kinda of like the apology for getting caught but not the actual action committed.

You have to love the new Leadership and it's non-partisan attitude on things.

""I think the Fraternal Order of Police endorsed McCain," Gibbs fired back, referring to Obama's Republican opponent in the 2008 election. "If I'm not mistaken."

When a reporter pointed out that Obama had won the support of the Policemen's Benevolent Association, Gibbs conceded: "We got some."

These people are nothing less than partisan Hacks looking at who supported whom during an election that took place Last Year. Facts be Damned just who voted for whom.

What a jerk. He must have looked at his latest polls. That wasn't an apology he was making an excuse for saying Cambridge cops were stupid. He never apologized.

Why is Obama even commenting on a local issue? Oh yeah. The idiot who got arrested is a buddy of Obama. Also, I saw a report that Obama had 17 citations from the Cambridge police Obama was a student. Obama has an axe to grind and he's trying to throw gasoline on the fire to then come in for the rescue, later.

Typical partisan, divisive, twerp we have as a president. I'm so embarrased by him.

Projection (focusing on others' "furor" rather than the act itself) is a very common coping mechanism. Pres. Obama has invited the cop and and the prof to the White House to try to keep this from becoming a wildfire. A simple "I'm sorry I made that remark; I was out of line" would certainly help diffuse things among the onlookers and the police unit.

You have one persons word against another. I wouldn't trust either of them.
There is no way to know what really happened so Obama has no business making comments.

As I white person I am still knowledgeable of the ultimate violation "contempt of cop" I have been in situations where they have harassed me. Been busted for possession and gotten that dropped due to lack of evidence. Got pulled over on a Friday night on the way home from the gym by the sheriffs. They pulled me out and questioned me about why I was shaking. First I don't deal well with stress, second my blood sugar was low because I had worked out hard, and third I have had a natural tremor since elementary school. And finally I was freezing my as off in a T shirt and shorts and wet out of the shower on a cold windy night. They worked their questions and sobriety tests on double overtime but I was completely sober so finally when they let me go they told me they knew I was up to something but they didn't know what and they would get me next time. Had the customs look up all the meds I voluntarily declared as I went through TJ customs and when they found out they were all completely legal they were upset so they saved face by offering to only confiscate half of them voluntarily. Now if the stuff is illegal why do I get to keep half. I know the answer and it is some so called cops are domestic terrorists who enforce submission not justice. While so far the majority of the cops I have come across have been fair and not made problems I have been cheneyed even while being as polite as possible. I can not imagine what would have happened if I was black or got in the slightest way upset. Here is something for these thugs to consider. Every time the cop management defends a racist thug just because he is a cop invites backlash. Screw enough people and one of them will nail a corrupt cop in the back. Won't be me but I won't feel sorry either if they keep it up. If only there was some video of this.
