Look ... it's this simple. In order for you to receive health care someone else has to either expend time or property. To claim a "right" to health care is to claim a "right" to someone else's time .. that is, a right to a portion of their life: whatever portion of their life it takes for them to either render the health service or produce the medical implement or drug that is being used. Hate to break this to you ... but who in the hell do you think you are to claim a portion of someone else's life as YOURS?

There ... that should settle this "healthcare is a right" thing. Would love to hear Conyer's response. -

Although not legally established, the idea that every American has a right to some level of healthcare has gained wide acceptance (III, Veatch and Branson 1976; IV, Buchanan 1983; III, Bole and Bondeson 1991). Support for this right has developed primarily in the 50 years since the end of World War II. No mention of health care can be found in either the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution; indeed, there was little anyone could do to improve health care or health outcomes in colonial times (IV, Capron 1989). During the 19th and early 20th centuries a government role in improving public health developed when certain services, such as clean water (V, Roemer 1988), or certain demands upon its citizens, such as quarantine for disease (VI, Fox 1989), were instituted in order to achieve better and safer conditions for the health of the general populace. Nonetheless, Congress passed a law establishing the Relief of Sick and Disabled Seamen in 1798 that provided medical care for merchant marines (IV, Capron 1989). Later, other national groups

benefitted from congressional action; health care was guaranteed to persons in the armed services, war veterans, Native Americans, prisoners, and federal employees (V, Kinzer 1990).
The World Health Organization (WHO) in 1946 went so far as to state that “The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being . . . .” Health was defined by WHO as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (II, World Health Organization 1958). In 1948, the new United Nations in its Universal Declaration of Human Rights stated that “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including . . . medical care” (II, United Nations 1948). This early declaration was followed by others which cited health or health care as benefits owed to all (III, Fuenzalida-Puelma and Connor 1989).

Will Conyers include in our rights the right to own a home of at least 300 square feet per person, that anyone in the united states, citizen or not, will have the same healthcare as Conyers, and that every person will have free transportation to a job.

Obama plans to release his budget proposal in detail on Thursday. Ahead of the formal announcement, the White House has been detailing pieces of it, including $8.6 billion for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1. The request is a $460 million increase over this year's budget.

If Obama wins approval of his budget request, the U.S. commitment would constitute more than 70 percent of global health funding. -

Blue Dogs strike deal: No health vote before recess
The Energy and Commerce Committee will resume its markup of healthcare legislation Wednesday afternoon under a deal between Blue Dogs and House leaders, but there will be no floor vote on the legislation before August.
Delaying a vote until after August was a key demand of the Blue Dogs, along with reducing the cost of the bill by $100 billion and allowing states to create health "co-ops" that would compete with the government-run "public option" and private insurers. -

Humans have rights to free speech, self defense, the right to be left alone by government.

When exactly did this new right come into being? If it is new then it is not unalienable.
And what exactly is the cut off point? Should the government spend $1 billion to give me 1 more week of life? Or is $100 million a more reasonable number?
To exercise the right to keep and bear arms you have to buy your own. Will the same be true of medical care?
If we have a right to government medical care can I please have a government tank? Or maybe just a couple of mortar tubes, a rifle or three (full auto), and a shot gun for clearing trenches. Did I leave out a pistol? Plus 10,000 rounds of ammunition a year so I can keep in practice. And replacements (the most modern) for all the above every 5 years. That way all the militias will be similarly armed.-

What about the right to public education? The right to expect protection from the police? The right for a fire department to come douse your house? For that matter, what about the right for women and minorities to vote. Weren't those 'new' rights?
The argument is whether or not 'promote the general welfare' is inclusive of a minimal amount of health care, or if we just allow people to die on the street. -

George Bernard Shaw once walked up to a beatiful starlet and asked "would you sleep with me for a million dollars?" She giggled and said yes, of course. Shaw replied, I only have ten bucks on me; can we still give it a go?" The starlet was offended and said, "what, do you take me for a *****?" Shaw said "we've already established that, we're just dickering over price."
So, should the government spend ten bucks to give you another week of life? -

No we can't put it on hold. But this will protect future Republican efforts to destroy the great policies created by this administration. When healthcare for everyone is passed you can bet the Repugs with the financial backing of their insurance buddies will be out in full force to destroy it. It's a good prevention measure.

According to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights...
Article 25.
* (1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
* (2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.
Representative Conyers' suggestion that everyone is entitled to a standard of medical care regardless of sickness, employment status, and ability to pay seems founded in international law. Enshrining it in the Constitution makes perfect sense. The question of who pays for the "standard of medical care," has yet to be decided. The simple solution to me is this...we would have more than enough money to pay for health care if we were not bogged down in a war in the pursuit of oil.-

Why doesn't he add on the right to a mortgage at public expense as a constitutional right? I'll believe him when he drops out of the Congressional health care program. All of us are created equal but some are more equal than others. This clown has never done an honest day's work in his life, nor, like his brothers, does he pay for anything. HE IS AN ARGUMENT FOR TERM LIMITS.

Were in a recession. Of course unemployment is going to go up. I find it crazy for people to expect everything to be all better now. Remember when Obama took office there was talk of a depression greater than the one in the 1930's. Bread lines and such. That never happened. Whatever was done had, whether it was bailouts, stimulus, or whatever, we are still here. Yes a lot of people are unemployed, but what else can be done to get employment up without increased government spending? Everyone seems to want immediate gratification. I warned here on Propeller that cutting taxes and increasing defense spending was a recipe for disaster. Your conservative brethren laughed it off and called me a kook. Common sense told me that if you increase spending for war, someone has to pay for it. A tax or similar levy had to be in effect to pay for it. Bush told us to keep shopping, all was well. We watched the threat level go from red to orange to yellow everyday on our TV sets. I was scoffed at. Bush actually lowered taxes again and again. The war waged on. He kept it off the budget tally to make it seem like there wasn't as bad a deficit than there really was. The economy took off because no one heeded the warning signs that we were spending too much, and the revenue in the tune of a 12 billion a month wasn't being accounted for. In addition gas went to over 4 dollars a gallon. Houses were selling for incredibly inflated prices and crazy financing schemes were invented to allow people to afford it. Obama stepped into the office of President with a grim economic outlook. He gathered the best minds he could find to come together to try to fix the economy and hit the ground running. Even before he took the oath of office he had been having meetings and trying to figure out what to do about the mess that had devoloped at the end of the bush presidency. In spite of the what experts predicted would be the worst depression of all time in America. Obama managed to keep our economy and currency afloat. Did it hurt us? Damn right it did! Will we continue to feel the pain for awhile? Damn right we will! Just like after a company or individual goes bankrupt, the following months or years the ramifications are still felt. Companies reorganize, individuals readjust there priorities and try to keep from doing the same thing over again. This is a reorganization of America's priorities. What we did before will send us right back where we came from. People seem to have a short memory, but I'm not talking about something that happened that long ago.

jovial,Yes compared to what we have now I Believe Bush was an good president. He went at the economy at full throttle, his tax cuts done what they were suppose to do,create jobs.Of course democrats hated him so they sent tax cuts back,or burned the checks. In 06,and early 07 the treasury couldn't believe how much money was coming in.When this happens to Obama,I'll will be at the fore front of his reelection effort. The unimployment numbers come out in a day or two,and where will Obama be,France,England, the middle east,no been there done that.He will be wallowing around in extacy at the twenty seven million dollar estate of the Kennedy clan.So all you boys, and girls who were dropped from the rolls at the unimployment agency might want to watch the leftist media so you can see how to have fun in a jobless recovery.

A Health Care Right Amendment would save more American lives and protect American freedoms a hundred thousand times more than the misquoted misinterpreted second amendment ever could. Most of us know this. Sadly, the metal penis hugging birther droolers are too gutless to go against their overlords( top 1% of wealth) to support something that would actually do themselves good.

This is a dead dog. Health care is NOT a "right." As has been noted above, how can it POSSIBLY be a right? What happens when kids in high school start to realize that if they become doctors, they essentially become slaves? Think the medical schools will fill right up? Nope. They will be EMPTY. So then, where is everyone going to get that health care that is their "right?" I am also absolutely amazed that this freaking idiot thinks that he - or the government, or someone - has a "right" to steal from ME to pay for someone else's "right" to health care. I can guarantee you, there will be blood in the streets and a new government in the United States if this crap EVER sees the light of day.

Yes it's not a right. The title of this story is,"Conyers to Introduce Constitutional Amendment Making Health Care a ‘Right’ " In other words he thinks it should be a right. As far as someone taking your money to pay for other people's healthcare, you already are. Who do you think is paying for the indigent now? Somehow someway those bills get paid. It's not coming from the people that can't afford to pay. Actually it's more expensive when they have to go to an emergency room for treatment. Emergency room visits are more expensive.

Joe... where do you come up with these ideas ..."This is a dead dog. Health care is NOT a "right." As has been noted above, how can it POSSIBLY be a right? What happens when kids in high school start to realize that if they become doctors, they essentially become slaves?... Can you support this with some sort of documentation??? I don't believe that is possible. In Canada..Britain..France..etc... there are waiting lines to become doctors. So in "your view" what is the difference between the USA and the rest of the world based on your view point. Maybe you believe that #### may be the only reason for becoming a doctor..... I am sorry ...but you are so way off base and paranoid it is unhealthy. People with views such as yours are am minority. The greed that shows up in these debates about health care is disgusting. .....Everyone should be entitled to good health care.... if you believe your country should not provide "good" healthcare to each and everyone of its citizens, then you must believe in sa failed society...

GFY. I pay my own insurance Boy. By ensuring all Americans are covered, I won't have to subsidize those who can't afford health care. Ever hear of frreedom of speech? I'd advise you to read the Constitution(all of it, not just what you think is important- no penis= second amendment) before you start publicly screeching like an hysterical coward. Judging by your anti-American ranting,. I'd say you're probably NRA. Life member?
