After Combat, Victims of an Inner War »

The number of suicides reported by the Army has risen to the highest level since record-keeping began three decades ago. Last year, there were 192 among active-duty soldiers and soldiers on inactive reserve status, twice as many as in 2003, when the war began. (Five more suspected suicides are still being investigated.) This year’s figure is likely to be even higher: from January to mid-July, 129 suicides were confirmed or suspected, more than the number of American soldiers who died in combat during the same period.

Those statistics, of course, do not offer a full picture. Suicide counts tend to be undercounts, and the trend is less marked in other branches of the military. Nor are there reliable figures for veterans who have left the service; the Department of Veterans Affairs can only systematically track suicides among its hospitalized patients, and it does not issue regular suicide reports.

Considering how the liberals and leftists of this country dump on our military, scream at them, assault them, criticize them, treat them like trash, call them "killers," and crap all over the good work they do throughout the world, this unfortunately does not surprise me. Liberals have made them feel like sh** and it's disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourselves libs and you are responsible for this travesty.

Sick. And as if the New York Times gives a flip. They are probably happy about this. Gross.

We have a serious shortage in military recruitment. We have lowering our standards, but that's not even working. This forces the military to extend tours of duty, to already tiered bodies. My heart goes out to all the men and women in uniform

this detailed story of one man depicts the tragedy of war. there are no good wars. the people who are dragged into them do the best they can in impossible circumstances.

the wars in iraq and afghanistan might be worse than the normal tragic setting because they have no clear military objective. many returning veterans have talked about that lack of purpose. all that remains for them is supporting each other, as the article describes.
