Posted By Progressive 4 months, 1 week ago in Political OpinionDuring the campaign, Barack Obama's enemies seemed reluctant to smear him with ugly rhetoric. But as The Daily Beast's Matthew Yglesias points out, the last week has seen it come out in full force.

The GOP might be getting traction through their rejection of Obama's health-care agenda, opposition to Sonia Sotomayor and even the kooky birthers, but might they be damning the future of their party? Writing for the Huffington Post, Thomas Edsall says the Republicans' current strategy is very reminiscent of the "Southern Strategy" that took advantage of racial prejudices though much of the later 20th century. Conservatives are returning to their white base as the party reels and it has produced results: Obama's approval ratings have suffered a precipitous fall among lower-income whites. Still, the demographics of numerous presidential elections since the 60s prove focusing on the dwindling white majority is destined to fail.

nice article pro, and here's a an exceptional comment posted there:

"The anonymity of the internet allows people with deep-seated racist feelings to express themselves.....bringing racism out in the open......
Even the health care issue and foreign policy is affected, because if Barack Obama is successful here, he looks good. The Republicans can't have that--no way--and they're willing to sacrifice the nation to get back in power.
They have no soul."

Have the birthers found a home base? According to a poll by Public Policy Polling, just 32 percent of Republicans in Virginia believe that President Obama was born in the United States. 41 percent, meanwhile, believe that he was not, while 27 percent are still not sure. The poll also showed the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Bob McDonnell, leading over the Democrat Creighton Deeds, who beat Terry McAuliffe in the primary.

I don't buy the premise that "Obama's enemies were reluctant to smear him with ugly rhetoric" last fall. Most of the racial rhetoric being used now was first brought up then.
Reply
But those enemies have become loud enough since that time to create enough of a feeling that there's an acceptance of racism in others who'd have been too ashamed to use it. There's no doubt racial politics is gaining momentum. -

A media watchdog ad attacking CNN anchor Lou Dobbs for his "racially charged" support of conspiracy theorists who question President Obama's birth certificate is all set to run tomorrow on CNN. But there's fat chance you'll ever see it on CNN. Five of the six cable providers who sold ad time to Media Matters rejected the ad for CNN.
Reply
"CNN retains the right to object to any ad whose purpose is to attack CNN or our employees," a spokeswoman told Politico. Not to worry: the ad will run on Fox and MSNBC, and has already been widely viewed on YouTube.

During Obummer's rise, it seemed that ANYone who'd dare to question Obummer and his policies was immediately called a... RACIST!!! I have a feeling that after he gets done with America, the word "racist" will be probably be associated with the term "free-thinker".

The most virulent critics of Obama have become so frustrated that when they see a political opening they get so excited they forget to keep their racism in check. Seen this happen to most conservative (far right) talk show hosts and many Republican politicians. It'll get worse the more successful Obama is with his agenda. Racist rhetoric = Obama's popularity.

Obama's buddy Chavez shut down over 30 radio stations because they don't represent his point of view.

Here in the United states we are supposed to have free speech.
However, there are those on here who never studied civics and think that their freedom of speech, but no one else's, is guaranteed because their candidate won the election.-

Are the Nazis shouting down the other citzens trying to conduct an intelligent debate at these Town Hall meetings practicing 'Free Speech'?
It seems to me the Right's fear of 'government control' has gotten out of hand.
My hope is that once the more rational among us SEE the success of GOVERNMENT RUN PROGRAMS like 'Cash For Clunkers', the pedelum will inevitably and decisively swing the other way.

If I disagree with Obama that makes me a racists?

Gosh, I always thought it was cool to have a man that is half black and half white as president because I thought the blacks could talk smack about him without being called a racist because they were talking smack to his black half and the whites could do so because they were talking to his white half.
Unfortunately his white half has no value to people on the left that continually talk about racism they only talk about the black portion of a man or woman. Of course when Obama says 'typical white woman' it means nothing to these same people,,,,,,,, man what a great set up, being able to have it both ways. -

Maybe these people don't respect Obama as well. That sort of thing does go both ways and the ones that have those they support (for whatever reason they have) don't like it when it happens to their side and feels that if it's done to their side it's open season to return the favor.
Reply
This is why doing that sort of thing is so counterproductive. -

How do you avoid this with the likes of who does not enforce the laws, but renders them of no effect with abrogation of the law in direct and abstract ways?
Oboma is one of them too...backing the NSA, who is completely out of the due process within government with no one to control them or no one to stop them...as the only way to remove them, is to stop funding them, but then the police unions would use their dues to support them!
I have always been told to let my no's be no's and yes's be yes. But congress puts both somewhere where they request you say yes or no...but then you would say both...as or means inclusive if not both. -

The complaint was that cops in NJ stopped black speeders more than they stopped white speeders, right?
Unabashed racism, right?
Along comes...oh...Obama's alma mater...and sets up cameras. You know, those devices that function automatically as designed without bias?
The cameras were part of a test to determine if NJ cops were disproportionately stopping black speeders. The film was divided up. One group determined the speed. Another group, unaware of the speed assigned each vehicle, identified the race of the driver.
As it turns out, BLACKS WERE BEING TREATED DISPROPORTIONATELY. They were far and away the biggest speeders and the cops were not stopping nearly as many blacks as the cameras caught speeding (on a percentage basis).
You did see this on MSM, right? You heard Obama or his lackey racist professor Gates giving Harvard credit for their research, right?
You don't mind if YOUR family is killed by black speeders in NJ, do you?
