Greg Mitchell: On the 63rd Anniversary: Why Hiroshima Matters More Than Ever »
Posted By tehranchik 4 months, 3 weeks ago in Political OpinionSixty-three years after the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, The Bomb is still very much with us. The U.S. retains over 5000 nuclear weapons -- does this surprise you? -- with better than 4000 said to be "operational." There are plans to reduce this number, but only by 15%.
Over and over top policymakers and commentators say, "We must never use nuclear weapons again," yet they endorse the two times they have been used, in a first-strike. To make any exceptions, even in the past, means exceptions can be made. The line against using nuclear weapons has been drawn....in the sand.
That is why I always urge everyone to study the history surrounding the decision to use the bomb -- and how the full story (along with photos, film footage, documents, and so forth) was covered up for decades. There is certainly, in the minds of the media and the American public, no taboo on using nuclear weapons -- and it all started with Hiroshima and Nagasaki 63 years ago.

It certainly is scary that we're still having to worry about nuclear weapons - even thoe "held" by the "Great Powers" 64 years after their first practical "tryouts".
Let's face it - that was what they were - and Japan provided a perfect opportunity - though they were already suing for peace.
I suspect that in the backrooms of power there was a distinct rush to "do the deed" before it was too late. In fact I beieve that has already been athenticated but I'm a bit sleepy to search it out right now.
Some apologists seem to have beieved that it would make the world a SAFER place?
Has it? -

This is a blot on the USA. (One of many). Our government okayed the massacre of nearly 200,000 people--all civilians, old people, children, burning them to a crisp. Not since the firestorm of Dresden civilians had we done such a horrible thing.

For those who say it "saved American lives..." Japan was suing for peace behind the scenes, and our government refused to grant peace. Also, the best place to have dropped one would have been where a concentration of the Japanese army was in the islands in the south Pacific. They could have killed only military, and they could have seen the horrible consequences of the use of nuclear weapons. Our government wanted to show the world its invincible power.
Little did they know that radiation particles travel in the wind currents and kill indiscriminately. The residents of parts of Utah have a higher cancer average than anywhere in the USA because of the deadly winds that blew over the Wasatch Mountains from the Nevada test sites. (And Mormons are the cleanest living people in the USA, most abstain from alcohol and tobacco.)
Nuclear fallout cannot be contained. To those who think they might be safe: When volcanic Mount St. Helens erupted back in 1980, it was on the north west coast of the USA. Yet the prevailing winds brought volcanic ash to my mother's home in southern Illinois. I walked through it and watched my feet turn gray. It could have been radioactive dust particles. Nuclear weapons cannot be controlled. And should never again be used.
HMMace: By the way, the Saudi royal family are bosom buddies of the Bush family. Saudi Arabia is our "ally." Besides, we get oil from them. All our presidents bow to the Saudi royal family. They were here when 9/11 happened and President Bush had them flown home secretly.
