I may have this wrong, but what I heard was that Scientology was invented as a fictional religion during a brainstorming session at a science fiction convention. Mr. Hubbard apparently decided (correctly it seems) that it was a cash cow and ran with it.

Actually BB I've the article on a submission here and the internet that he is actually rethinking his faith. IF the article is to believed, they have massive amounts of dirt on him that would not only embarrass him, his wife and daughter (and the rest of their family and friends) but potentially ruin his career.

Think about that. The Church of Scientology has dirt on Travolta. Who else is a member? What dirt do they have on oh I dunno...Lisa Marie Presley? Her mother? How about Penelope Cruz? Is her steady Javier Bordem (God is he a good actor.) now a Scientologist? What about the biggest public face of scientology Tom Cruise?
While the celebrities haven't given up all their families, friends and worldly possessions like everyday citizens/ people, they have given millions and they won't want to lose it. Especially if someone like Travolta leaves and dares to tell the truth. -

I hear tell Travolta is looking to distance himself from Scientology since the death of his son. Of course, he could never quit, since it's their policy to record all the embarrassing stuff you reveal to them during your sessions for use as blackmail.

A dearly-loved Polish friend living in England - one of the wisest people that I have ever known in my entire life - lost his whole life, soul and spirit to Scientology.
I went to visit him after being out of touch for some time - he had moved from Harrogate in Yorkshire to East Grinstead where the Scientology base was - and still is, I guess. He had become a zombie. The only sign of life was the fire in his eyes but it had become a crazed glint.
