Double Standards and Disingenuosity On Bellowing Townhall Disruptors »
Posted By jovial 3 months, 2 weeks ago in Political OpinionLast summer, when Nancy Pelosi was speaking at an event on her book promotion tour, one of our editors at OpEdNews.com asked Pelosi some pointed, very well informed questions.. Pelosi denied, denied, denied and within seconds, security guards were manhandling our 110 pound editor, dragging her out of the Philadelphia Free Library meeting room where Pelosi was speaking. While our editor was and is angry about Pelosi's policies and actions, she didn't act angry until she was manhandled. Note that she did not act out, did not raise her voice, yet Pelosi had her removed.

When liberal groups protested during the Bush administration there was little to no coverage of it on TV, newspapers, or radio. (If most people can remember that far back)Now that the right-wingers are protesting it's splattered all over our TV sets, the radio, and newspapers. Why the double standard? Shouldn't we teargas them or lock them up like they did to liberal protesters when they got too rowdy? Again, why the double standard?

Police Fire Flash Grenades, Teargas at RNC Protesters
Reply
Outside the convention Tuesday, police fired flash bang grenades and teargas at peaceful protesters after the end of a march led by the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign. The grenades are designed to produce a deafening bang and a blinding flash. Twin Cities police arrested at least ten people on Tuesday, bringing the total number this week to over 300. Dozens of activists jailed on Monday were still being slowly released last night. Democracy Now! caught up with a medic shortly after he was freed after more than twenty hours behind bars.
Medic: “There are still a whole lot of people in jail waiting to get out, and a lot of people are really uncertain about how they’re getting out. And some of them have various injuries from pepper spray and getting beat up by the cops before getting in there, just kind of uncertain what’s going on.”

Here's what happened in BUSH's America when you protested. What happened to that kind of protest suppression?

Well Jovial, it started long ago and is conditioned by what our right-wing media writes about such issues. Don't forget that Bush's "election" in 2000 was partly caused by a "violent demonstration" by organized right-wing goons attacking polling stations (and those re-counting votes).

We should have put an end to right-wing violence long ago - starting with the "anti-abortion" fanatics. -

Actually, what I remember from the Bush administration is that he would vet each and every attendee at every speech he ever made, forcing people to sign "loyalty" pledges and give all their personal information in the event they decided not to "behave" the entire time. I know there were some protests, but more often they were protests against the fact that the right to protest was eliminated.
Reply
Now, I don't think they should be allowed to completely disrupt meetings like this, but I didn't agree with the other extreme either. Honestly, I would rather we err on the side of allowing the protests and exposing the hypocrisy surrounding it all. Then, changing tactics and perhaps doing the town hall meetings online, as has been suggested. That way people can do "virtual protests" for the "virtual town hall" but not prevent the rest of us from participating civilly in the question/answer process. Personally, that is what I think would serve everyone best. No one is being stripped of their rights...protesters can protest and supporters can participate. But then there would be no train wreck to report on and blame for problems, so I doubt it will ever really happen that way.

The only disrupting questions that Americans should be asking are when will we investigate the lies of September 11 2001 and the innocent Americans that were murdered on that day in order to bring us to our unjustified wars for corporate interest.

Big double standards in this story. The fact that this man used the obscene referenct ot tea party people says it all. His view of Code Pink is way out of line. When they go into action they try to shut down the person speaking that they do not like and have to be forcefully removed. Then he tries to blame what is happening on Republican Tea Party people. In Tampa it was an invitation only invited to the "Town Hall" meeting. Only good Democrats. The first problem arose when ACORN and Union people (They had arm bands on) tried to close the doors after only those invited were inside. They ended up winning much to the anger of those DEMOCRATS locked outside. After that it was the party faithful that held the representatives feet to the fire.

But the liberal Democrats have to try to change the subject from health care to the fact that many people are angry and try to make up stories about why they are angry. Never admit that a lot of Democrats are angry and blame it all on the obscene reference to the tea party people.
Libs ought to be ashamed of this kind of red herring ploy but I have never seen a lib get embarrassed about the lies they tell. -

Obama Names Tyson “Townhall Healthcare Debate Czar”
In keeping with his tradition of naming czars–individuals with extraordinary skill sets in their given field of expertise–to oversee crucial policy areas, President Obama has named former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson as his new “Townhall Healthcare Debate Czar.”
Although some have questioned Tyson’s qualifications, the president expressed supreme confidence in his choice.
What Mike lacks in actual knowledge about health care, fiscal responsibility, and interpersonal communications, he more than makes up for with determination and sheer brute strength reasons BO -

This is the best way to rebut the Republican arguments for what has been happening at the town hall meetings today is to show their view of the opposition from 2007.

Man, I really like this. Shows the Republicans (and cluster-FOX) for the hypocrites they really are. -

What got the Town Hall shouters so much attention was the total idiocy of their comments: they were protesting something entirely in their imaginations, that neither congress nor the President had proposed! It wasn't news that there were boisterous protesters at a meeting, but the content of their protestations.

Our government is dysfunctional. They can't get anything important done without filling it with special interests. We would probably get a better solution by having the NSF sending out a RFP, or by running a contest (like they do for architectural projects), with a billion dollar prize, for the best health care solution (health insurers to be exempt from participating).

This is not ok. People are getting hurt and the violence is escalating. These disruptor people are not sincere and are being fed by zealots that do not care about anything except themselves. Barak Obama's only mistake is believing in sanity and that intelligence will overcome. You townhall rabblerousing people make me ashamed to be American.

Wrong again Kisa. The reason that protestors against Bush weren't heard from is they were all detained and denied Habeus Corpus. It would seem as if the only thing that Bush wasn't a complete failure at was violating the constitution.

I don't think some of you understand what's going on here AT ALL. The people who are yelling and getting angry at these meetings are NOT all "Right-wing Republicans" - there are ALSO Democrats getting angry. And Independents. EVERYONE is getting angry because the damned Congress and communist-in-chief are doing - TRYING to do - things that the MAJORITY of people, REGARDLESS of party, DO NOT WANT DONE! How do you fools not GET that? These are NOT strictly partisan issues. At least, not outside of the MSM and Congress.

Thank you! I've been saying all along that this is not partisan, that there are people from every walk of life at these townhalls. But apparently if you dare to disagree with the "almighty" then you are obviously a Bush loving neocon.
