Well, as I spend my days doing counseling, I'm often struck by the increasing lonliness and sense of disconnection people feel ... from one another within the marriage, the larger family, the neighborhood, community, and so on. I'm also struck by how we're Facebooking, Tweeting, blogging, and emailing at a feverish pitch. However, the electronic "connections" don't seem to fill the void; and the $100's of dollars in "connection fees" don't bring a warm sense of belonging!

So I should sign off and go talk to people face to face! Join a group, try a new activity, take a walk through the neighborhood and say hello to people, participate in a fund raiser activity, consider joining a fraternal organization (even formerly secret one's that now advertise on TV because it's getting difficult to find people who will find the time) ...

That´s in fact a sad development! Eating together, saying "Hello!" to one another has vanished in the virtual stress we´re doing to ourselves. Most people don´t have courage enough not to take their mobile with them on holidays (or just to leave it inactive!) or not to answer their e-mails for a weekend. The necessity of reachability is the disease of our days. Recently, I made quite a nice experience: I had to get up very early during some month, because I had to catch a certain train. So, I asked my parents, if they could make a very short call every morning to make sure that I had already got up. It didn´t take very long, and this "Good morning, my darling! See you´re awake ..." was one of the most precious moments of the day. I really missed them, when this morning calls stopped, because I started working in my city again ...
