I think we're all seeing the de facto Re-Branded Republican Party ... as defined by their de-facto Spokespeople ...
Reply
Rush Limbaugh,
Glenn Beck,
Sean Hannity,
Bill O'Really,
Michael Savage,
Michele Malkin,
Annie Coulter ...
... in the vacuum that is the Modern Republican Party ... those with the loudest ... most shrill voices ... and who frame things in the most crass manner ... 'flame-iin' to fill the void.
I watched the Glenn Beck show the other night ... it was one of the absolute saddest displays I've seen in media.
It was actually sick ... and I believe you would have to BE sick to watch a show like that ... willingly.
I can see it being used to indoctrinate some collection of poor, ignorant people ... but to watch it WILLINGLY ... it's just perverted.

'flame out' implies something different than what the article says.

i agree that it's too early to write the epitaph for the gop, but this was supposed to be about how they were going to be more receptive and be a bigger tent party; all indications have been that, in fact, the reverse has been true.

additionally, eric cantor may not be the best person to lead this effort, for both tactical and strategic reasons.

I do not see how the GOP can be more receptive to mainstream conservatives, independents, and swing voters when they continually bow to the angriest and most extreme members of their party. The amount of hate mongering emanating from their most ardent supporters have to be alienating most Americans. The polls support that hypothesis, as well.

When Senator Martinez from my state (Florida) crossed party lines to vote in favor of Judge Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation, the writing on the wall became more evident. Unlike Arlen Specter who switched parties after realizing that the GOP's platform no longer represented him, Martinez decided to drop out entirely.
I suspect that many mainstream conservatives can no longer in good conscience support a party that is now supporting hate mongering and incitement to violence. It is clear that moderate conservatives do not see a home in the GOP as it is now expressing itself.-

what polls?

with regard to Martinez, big deal. while there was a whole lot of flame and smoke, there wasn't much heat. no one with half a brain looked at Sotomayor for more than a few minutes because she's replacing Souter. its not as if it'll be a noticeable change on the SCOTUS. its an equivalent swap.
you can read into it all the political posturing you want, but it amounts to nothing.
and then you close by waxing poetic about more nothing. OK. i get it. you're a democrat. thing is, you can't speak for anyone other than yourself. making claims about what other people are doing -and why- are out of your, ummmm... pay grade. i see a disgruntled mass. and that's disgruntled after 7 months. think its going to get better? i don't. -

All they have to do is wait while the Democrats kill themselves. They are doing a great job of it already. After ranting for years about the Bush deficit they took congress and upped the deficit some. Now they have the presidency and they have spent in less than 6 months more than Bush had over 8 years. Creating huge bureaucracies that will meddle into people lives even more. Now he wants to add to that another $200 billion (more than most of Bushes one year deficits) with the huge health care abomination of government in action.
"they continually bow to the angriest and most extreme members of their party. The amount of hate mongering emanating from their most ardent supporters have to be alienating most Americans."
This is nonsense if you look behind the foolish rants. What happened in Tampa Spadecaller? Did you know that it was a by invitation only town hall meeting. They had ACORN and Union people letting in people on a list around the people that showed up for this meeting. They closed the doors with a fight about it when there were empty seats. So those angry people inside at that time were the "Good Democrats". These Demcrats were the ones that were angry with the representative. In most of the meeting there was a time of allowing the person to speak and then answer questions and let people make comments. The place usually erupted after the person told people that what they were going to do in opposition to what the people had been saying. That is when the screaming took place. It was stupid on the part of the politicians to say something other than they would consider what had been said.

The Republican party is missing an excellent opportunity. They should mount a national campaign claiming that they are NOT the "party of no" - but are rather the party of "HELL no!" And restate their original founding objectives of smaller government. At this point, it isn't difficult at all to point a "tax and spend" finger at the Democrats and HAVE IT STICK. People are ANGRY (regardless of Democratic denials, they really ARE) and I think that a LOT of Democrats could be flushed out of Congress in 2010 if someone will just tell the truth and SWEAR to abide by the Constitution.

What they should be doing is working with the Democrats helping to make sure that the change we need in this country comes to pass. They would gain much more support from the independents in this country if they showed that they care more about the country than they do about their party.

Then again, I saw this train wreck coming when he had to bow and pay homage to Rush after his "listening tour" began. If this is the future of the Republican Party, they're toast. -

Yep both parties 'done went and got lost'.
Reply
By my last readings about the dirt on both parties the Democrats are now Chicago based Neo-Marxist Thugs while the Republicans, especially the older well dressed ones loudly bitching at their politicans in town hall meetings, are well dressed Neo-Nazis.
Long live freedom of speech and the two, three, four, or maybe five party system in the US.-

Icono, the political system in the USA is a winner-take-all situation which does not allow for parliamentarian types of election results where different parties can represent different ideas.
Reply
Each of our major parties are supposed to include all of the different factions of political life, although the Republican Party of today is lopsided in favor of one of the fringe elements, the fundamentalist neocons.
There are still other factions/fractions that are present, but mainstream thinking is limited to a few, such as Slate here on Propeller.
We all have our own ticks and wish what is best for our own little worlds, yet we seem to have less and less tolerance and ability to compromise on strengthening our country to make it easier for people located on the bottom half of the financial ladder to make a go of it.

right now its really hard to tell whose even in charge of the GOP.

and since obama took office the right seems only to be getting nuttier and more shrill as things continue to not go their way. the right has no ideas to help america, and the level headed conservatives are silent while the birthers and disruptors turn up the volume and become the voice of their party.
I see no signs of a rebranding effort, unless bitter and hateful is what the GOP is going for.
