Pennsylvania is a state chock full of elderly people who tend to vote Republican. When most of Pennsylvania elected Senator Specter, they did so because he is a Republican. These same elderly people have been hit with messages from the Republican party about how their doctors will be taken from them. They are told that "death panels" will push to have medications withheld from them in their final year of life. The smear campaigns are in full swing in Pennsylvania as they are in other states.

That said, Charles Krauthammer raised an interesting point in his column this morning. He suggested that we do need tort reform and insurance reform. Instead of doctors prescribing defensive medicine to protect them from lawsuits, the government could save billions annually by wiping out unnecessary procedures. The savings could be used to pay for some of the health coverage needed by poor Americans. It is not the best solution to the problem, but certainly one worth considering as part of a larger program. -

I agree that these legislators who are running (supposedly) these meetings should keep order in them. I applaud Specter for doing this in the face of an angry crowd.

As for which side he wants to be remembered on - he switched sides when he realized he wasn't going to win his primary on the republican side. In March he emphatically stated he was running again as a republican, not an independent, but a republican. After which Pat Toomey mentioned that he was throwing his hat into the republican ring to run as well. April Specter decides he doesn't want to be a republican anymore and will run as a democrat.
